The BEST Fish and Chips in England

Post by micahroni »

alright guys, as I am getting ready to move across the pond, I am hoping to see more of England (other than London). I love food so I've decided to go on a gastronomy adventure in finding the best fish and ships in England! any suggestions will be greatly appreciated :smt003

I went to one right in the heart of London and in big letters it said "The Best Fish and Chips in the World"...it wasn't.

You have to look to the southwest! The fish is fresh, the chips are hot and being by the sea always makes them taste better!

I agree with surfing tigress. Rick Stein has a great takeaway chippy in Padstow (along with many other fish based outlets in the town) and I had the most incredible monkfish in beer batter!

I live in Kent, and the Kent coast has some pretty decent fish. Broadstairs is my tip.

Hull is a great fish and chips location (and Hull chip spice is amazing). I'm also sure you can't get good chip shop gravy south of Yorkshire

I had dinner at Rick Steins Seafood Restaurant in Padstow on Friday. Not bad but expensive. According to the locals so is his Fish and Chip Shop and not as good as the "local" in Falmouth although he (Rick Stein) is rumoured to be opening a f&c outlet there also.

For the best fish and chips in the world stay in Leicester - visit the Grimsby!
Still keeping the faith!

If you are in the west country and pass Bodmin, go to the College Lane fish bar. Looks unassuming, but has seriously good award winning f&c.

Anywhere north of Doncaster as far as Thirsk. Done in beef dripping....fantastic.

Personal favourites..Petergate, York. Eastgate, Pickering. The one on the High Street, Huddersfield.

The chippy in Brandesburton (twixt Beverley and Bridlington) serves great big fresh portions of haddock. I had one this lunchtime and I'm still full.

All the chippies in Bridlington also serve the freshest fish anywhere.

Watch out for the seagulls though. They each weigh forty kilos and will pinch your dinner as soon as look at you.

I'll second that about Bridlington - I had some epic fish and chips there. Still not as good as the haddock and chips I had in Cleethorpes though. Almost made Cleethorpes seem bearable - really, it was that good.

I hope that you have a great time doing the tour of our chippies.
I would like to recommend one that we went to in Albeburgh on the Suffolk coast. No idea what it is called but you can just spot it in the high street from the queues.
Another one that I would recommend is Chipwick on Brighton Road in Worthing it's well worth going to if you have had enough of Brighton's pleasures!
My personal best fish and chips were in Bridlington on the harbour wall circa1975.
And their revenge is as the tiger's spring,

Get yourself up to Scotland where most of the fish eaten in England is landed(I've seen the lorries in the car park at Aberdeen).
Bell Rock chippie in Arbroath does a curried fish supper,a "smokie" fish supper, with a battered Mars Bar for afters!!!!!!!

As I've said elsewhere, I don't eat fish myself but husband and many other family members recommend the Fisherman's Hut on Blackshore Harbour in Southwold, Suffolk.

Brian's in Far Headingley, Leeds. can't remember the name of the road but you can see it from the Otley Road.

when Princess Anne went to Leeds, that's where they took her.

and I can vouch for the excellence of the product, at least it was brilliant last time I was there.
