Players we have had but let go

Post by Chobbsy »

Just thinking about some of the players we have had over the years but let go,

Stuart Abbott, went onto be a fantastic centre and world cup winner.
Phil Christophers
Andy Powell - currently playing fantastic rugby
Brent Wilson - doing really well at Newcastle

Just to name a few

Luckily we more than make up for letting a few get away

Hipkiss and Mauger are also fantasic centres
Murphy and Hamilton are brilliant, without doubt
Jordan Crane is, one day, going to be one of the best number 8s in the world
Croft is already one of the best flankers in the world and only in his early 20s

I agree we do keep the very best, I remember that we have in recent times also let go Will Skinner and Will Greenwood, but that was for the best I think, I guess this thread is inspired by the loss of Tom, but again its thinking about the best for that individual.

Thread in no way inspired by Tom leaving, and it wasn't about who we kept but who we let go

Andy Powell is a big player who we let go and didn't give a change. He was scoring about 3 tries again for the reserves. Look at him now!!! He is amazing a would be great at Leicester.

Other players we let go: Tony Underwood - was gutted when he left!!! :smt010
Jaco van der Westhuyzen - started to do so well but he left.
Tom Varndell - in the future we are going to be saying - WHY WHY did we let him go - but looking foward to tuilagi running at him!

TIGERS FOR THE DOUBLE!!!! :smt041 :smt041 :smt041
COME ON TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!

We did not let Jaco go, he had already signed a contract to play in Japan the following season and being an honourable man felt that he could not retract on that contract to stay with Tigers.

Gustard, Short, Balding, Abraham, Hamilton, Murphy F. - all handy players

Holford,Nebbit Buckland, Grindal, Young, Goode - not quite so good.

Lloydy was at the end of his career mind, glous only had one season out of him.

Its hard to keep all the quality players, what with the salary cap and massive competition for places that often leaves some players on the bench or not at all; and they end up getting frustrated.

Erinle for one, is a strong, good defensive centre but hasn't really played for us all season. But then the coaches can see the work they do in training as well as on the pitch.

Jennings ( why did Tigers get rid) and Cullen.

Both went back to Ireland to further their international careers. Fat lot of good that has done they cannot even get into the Irish squad.

So can we have Shane back please.

Shane's wife was homesick apparently.

The irony is that when Cullen came here nobody in Ireland could understand why we wanted him. In next to no time the Tigers had brought the best out of him, as a player and captain. The problem was he wasn't going to get in the Ireland team playing outside Ireland. Now he's gone back his form has gone off the boil. Perhaps he should come back to Tigs, get good again and then go back, go off form and then come back.............

I think that players like Balding and Abraham were in a queue for there positions and just needed a decent run in a first team to complete their development. Its a problem when running a large squad of mostly top class potential players.
Opportunities always look bigger going than coming.

who says we LET them go?

maybe they wanted to go for whatever reason... if we kept everyone people reckon we shoudl and signed everyone they reckon we should we wouldn't have any squd problems through injury..

mind you no other team would have any other players and the subs bench would be the whole stadium

If you consider that we are currently sitting at the top of the premiership, then I can't see how any of these players have been that great a loss. Almost all of them were brilliant, but obviously we have players just as good or better to replace them.

The good thing about tigers is that we don't rely on just a handful of players, and are alwasy able to function without any member of the team.

The only player who has ever been intrinsic to Tigers makeup was Johnno.
