For those people living locally, the news has just been given that the proposed "eco-town" around the Stoughton & Great Glen area has been announced to be on the Government short list.

This means a HUGE development over that side of the city, with (apparently) all the people who will live there having to abide by set "eco-rules" and using public transport instead of private cars.
I know for me it is a case of NIMBYism to a certain extent, I grew up playing on those fields and I am horrified at the proposed loss of green belt, countryside, wildlife habitats and the increased traffic that will result.

Not a flood plain here, Kinny, just a big area running from Great Glen through Stoughton and connecting with the city.
Of course every one of the 1000s living there will use public transport, be completely green and the whole thing will work perfectly.
I just don't understand what is remotely "eco" about building 10000 to 15000 houses (even allegedly eco-ones) on open green countryside.
But then I'm not a Government planner.

The plans say that the eco-town will be built around the airport, basically engulfing it.
The plan can be seen on link below - the pinkish area edged red is the proposed area of the eco-town, which will be approximately the size of Hinckley.

No, they will leave that there so that the ‘eco warrior’ inhabitants of this new ‘eco town’ have some fences to chain themselves to in protest of the nearby aerodrome that was there decades before them!MrsSmith wrote:Are they building on top of the airport too? Or leaving that.
