Baseball Playoffs

Post by dailywaffle »

Anyone following the MLB playoffs ?

It doesn't seem quite the same without Boston this year, but I took some consolation in Detroit knocking out the NY Yankees. The Yankees' payroll is a mind-bending £43M pa, but it is now 6 years since they won the world series. Money can buy a playoff place, but it can't necessarily buy a championship .... thank goodness.

The 'semi-finals' start tonight, with Detroit at Oakland in the American League. The National League start their semi-finals tomorrow night, with St Louis at the NY Mets. Best of 7, winners go through to the world series. NASN (Setanta) will be covering all of the games, with Channel 5 showing the world series live.

I guess many will never have seen Channel 5's baseball coverage in the small hours, but it is very good, and well worth Sky +'ing or recording.

Each to their own. I don't think you can write off a whole nation's sports just like that :)

I once rendered an American friend speechless by describing baseball as being "a bit like rounders"

I'm sorry to say but the Mets will batter the Cards...they've relied on Poo-holes all season.

A better team than San Diego would have took them to the cleaners.

Baseball is acceptable as it's a British game...the rest of them are just image-over-content.

mrsmoody - that's OK, I know that you aren't the nasty type

Rizzo - well, rounders is "a bit like baseball", but not as good. So, your US friend shouldn't have gotten too huffy (although baseball was played in the UK before the States, so it is arguably a British game anyway).

Stuey - I agree that the Mets have been great all year, and the Cardinals aren't as dominant in the NL as they have been previously. But I'm an AL man, so I will be rooting for the winner of Detroit v Oakland.

If I was stretching my neck out I'd say it looks like a Detroit V Mets World Series and the Mets will be too strong for them...but I'd always saw that about the NL 'cause I always assume the AL have a disadvantage in not having DH for half the games.

They should scrap that rule, the entire team should bat & field. That's why I chose an NL team...it's the league that seems to have the fundamentals right.

Go Redbirds (more in hope than expectation).

Hi Stuey

I've always liked the DH; for example Boston wouldn't be the same without Dave Ortiz. Being a simple sole I have always preferred the 'power' of the AL over the 'finesse' of the NL; I do appreciate that this is a little simplistic, but you get my drift.

I have Sky +'d the first match in the ALCS, so looking forward to watching that tonight !

Game one rained off in NY...that could work in the Redbirds favour if they get off to a good start.

Detroit are looking good.

I certainly did. Cory Lidle, pitcher with the NY Yankees. The equivalent of a premiership footballer flying a plane into a luxury apartment block in London.

A personal tragedy, in that he leaves a wife and young son. No cause yet, as far as I know.

The A's are looking very poor at the moment. They fell apart in game 1 against the Tigers, and whilst looking a little better in game 2 they seemed to lack any sharpness. Detroit just seem to want to make things happen, whereas Oakland seem passive in comparison.

Good to see 'Pudge' Rodriguez still swinging the timber for Detroit. One of the all-time great catchers, his 'coaching' of the Tiger's pitchers when they get into trouble is great to watch.
