I have read elsewhere that Zidane was being racially abused by Italian players throughout the game.
And that lovely gentleman Materazzi made a point of covering his ears when the anti-racism message was being played over the tannoy.
At the time of the incident it is suggested that Materazzi called Zidane a terrorist. A reference to the fact that he is a Muslim.
Even if this is true, of course, it doesn't justify Zidane's actions but I think we should at least cut him some slack.

I was being too simplistic and not looking at all the circumstances in my post on Zidane. I had no idea that all that you are talking about may have happened. If as you say, the Italian players behaved towards Zidane in the way they did and Materazzi didn't acknowledge the anti-racism message that reflects very badly on them too and on Italy, particualrly as Materazzi would be seen to be a racist. Still though Zidane should not have acted in the way he did and he let down the team as his coach Raymond Domenech seemed to imply.

Who cares who said what to who. I had Italy in the sweep Anyway why must it have been a racist comment aimed at ZZ. Maybe he called him 'Baldy'.
If it was a Muslim/racist slur, why is the member of a peaceful religon (their word's not mine), reacting in such a violent way.
We have just had the World cup final in Soccer, the media is full of : The best player of the last 10 years was sent off in the final, by the same ref, who sent off the best English player (Rooney) in their last game. It about somes Soccer up nowadays.
