Orla, did you see that England beat Ireland in a one day game a couple of days ago?
Donncha O'Callaghan and Bruce Reihana are the best players that ever lived. Don't even bother to argue with me.

And - however good Imanol Harinordoquy is, he is still an idiot

to be fair we should have beaten them much more convincingly than we did

BelperJon, i know exactly what you mean. i went to see the angels play in anaheim 2 years ago. i was glad i went but we didnt stay for the whole game. it was interesting to note that people dont actually go to watch the match, they go to socialise. like in rugby or soccer, people wait until a break in the game to get food and drinks. its constant in baseball. people are always milling about and not concentrating. quite distracting!! good fun in a group though. i like watching it on tv better. the games only have a social atmosphere, not a competitive one.

at least the irish tried jess!

I've seen a baseball game too Orla. But it was minor league stuff. Portland vs some Oregon team. Was it good what you saw? It seems to me that the major games go on for quite a long time but I may be wrong. That's not totally different to the big matches in cricket! Although it sounds more so in baseball. At the England vs Sri Lanka match a couple of people ran on to the pitch almost half-naked (both blokes), half the crowd were tanked up with beer and it was pretty rowdy. The crowd seem better in the baseball. Cricket can be better also on t.v. I wonder with baseball then whether its a reason for a social occasion!!

The Irish did try and England lost in the cricket on Thursday although not in the football. England has one of your players now, Ed Joyce but he got injured!! :( :( Lovely ground, the Rose Bowl though.

I went to see San Francisco Giants v Florida Marlins last summer. Really enjoyed it! Very different to cricket though, I don't think there is much comparison between the two.

it was good enough, but im more a contact sport kinda girl! it bored me to be honest. thats why we left. i dragged everyone along and then got bored. oddly enough though, my brother, who hates ALL sports, actually quite enjoyed the baseball.

no similarities? i havent a hope so. i tried to understand cricket one day, but i got distracted cos i thought one of the players was quite hot! no idea what his name was though.

That players name wasn't Kevin Pietersen was it or Freddie Flintoff!!

The newly qualified player for England - Ed Joyce (from Dublin) was injured in the 20-20 match at the Rose Bowl. Hope he gets more of a break though. There is also an Irish wicketkeeper playing for Kent - Niall O'Brien. He's not too bad.

I am not a great baseball follower but I look out for some of the results and like it best when it gets near the so-called World Series. Would like to see a major game one day.

Going back to the start of this thread, I am afraid I have decided Geraint Jones must be dropped after last Saturday's game. He is in the team on reputation alone and Chris Read deserves a place much more. In fact he must be wondering what he has to do to get a place back. And while we are it it I would sack Duncan Fletcher too as he is completely useless as a coach and can not get the team going the way that To Mooody does for Sri Lanka and other such coaches.

Now then, it still goes on.

Because Geraint Jones continues to fail with the bat (which is supposed to make up for his inferior wicket keeping), Read is given a chance to show the selectors, once more, what he can do.

Read plays for England A.

He scores 120 not out in 165 balls.

Result?

Jones is picked again.

What a total waste of time.

Kin he scored 150 to be pedantic! I went to the match on the Saturday as it is an hour on the train for me to get to Canterbury. I enjoyed the play I saw and Chris Read kept pretty well despite the odd goading from one or two Kent fans and his innings was very good.

I am with you on Chris Read. His batting has improved immeasurably in the last two seasons and his keeping is better then Jones but he can't get a look in. I think its predominantly Duncan Fletcher's obstinancy and ignorance that is keeping Chris Read out of the team. He seems to think Geraint Jones is better even though most other people see differently. Even one of the selectors Geoff Miller seems to believe in Read so why can't Fletcher. That is one of the reasons I would like to see the back of Fletcher and the fact that he is hopeless as a coach. He goes with players even though there are better ones around out of blind loyalty and ignorance.

Sorry about the inaccuracy!

An insider from Trent Bridge told me that David Graveney is properly hacked off with his lack of influence in selection matters. Here's what Wisden says:

Wisden Overview
David Graveney's ruddy face, cigarette never far from those moustachioed lips, has been a familiar sight in English cricket since he first played for Gloucestershire in 1972. These days he combines his day job, as chief executive of the Professional Cricketers' Association - the players' union - with the almost fulltime role of chairman of the England selectors. After initial doubts that he could combine the two roles, he took over the selection job from Ray Illingworth in 1997. His time has been characterised by greater continuity of selection, and fewer of the Yorkshire-based hunches in which Illy specialised - but still the results have been indifferent, especially against Australia. Reports that the advent of the Hussain-Fletcher partnership in 1999 had marginalised Graveney were pooh-poohed by the ECB, but the suspicion lingers that he wields less power than formerly and the important selection decisions are now made by the coach and the captain.

I think that is a very fair desciption of David Graveney current role as Chairman of Selectors. I too think he has been marginalised by the coach in particular having too much influence in the selction process. He has every right to be annoyed at his lack of influence in the selection procedure. Maybe there are too many selectors in theory chosing the England team but I think he was chosen to do a job and he is not being allowed to do it properly.

A very good piece overall on David Graveney and his two cricketing roles. He wasn't too bad a cricketer when he was playing.
