I agree that normal Guinness is better than Extra Cold but what's wrong with the shamrock. Show's that the bar staff take a bit of pride in their black (I assume you mean a shamrock drawn into the cream rather than the green spray/stenciled one you get on St Plastic's Day).BelperJon wrote: No thank you, the normal Guinness please. No fancy glasses and no shamrock in the head either.
I was drinking in a pub before the England Ireland game a couple of seasons back...as kick-off approached I asked the Irish barmaid to desist with the shamrock until after the game, she cheekily put the word Eire into my pint.
I assume this virtual pub will do real ale...I'll have something light and hoppy please barman...an IPA or something like that.

The best Guinness I have had is in the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. Excellent stuff and the tour of the place wasn't bad either.
Jon, I know what you mean about the long drawn out analysis before the games. Not keen on all that either. I actually think the BBC programme is better then SKY or ITV but that may be just my opinion. Gary Lineker's very good, Alan Hansen, Alan Shearer, not so sure about Wrighty. Martin O'Neill was a very good analyser and Graeme Le Saux is another exceelnet one. Not sure if either of the latter wilkl be on any of the World Cup programmes.

The beeb told LeSaux he wasn't going to the world cup and he spat his dummy out of the pram.simon redshaw wrote:and Graeme Le Saux is another exceelnet one.
I don't rate him at all. Lee Dixon is much more insightful but doesn't try to dress it up as anything intellectual. Wrighty's just a cheerleader.
It's the beeb all the way with me...ITV have never been able to cover footy and never will be. One of my earliest footy memories is my Dad walking into the front room and turning the cup final over from ITV to BBC grumbling something like"ITV? they'll watch the :censored: grass growing". It was only when they got their grubby hands on The Premiership that I fully understood how right he was.
There is a few pubs in Liverpool where the Guinness is as good as anything you'll get outside of St James' Gate.

I didn't realise that about LeSaux!! Thanks for enlightening me!!
Lee Dixon is very good. I agree with your anlaysis of him.
Your Dad was very right about ITV - they don't make a great job of football - the Beeb is the best on that.
Stuart, I haven't been to Liverpool so didn't realise the Guinness was so good in the Liverpool pubs. So apologies there.

I agree with your evaluation of the Guinness in the Storehouse in Dublin: I was sampling it over there only a couple of months ago. As for all the pundits you listed, I'll take your word for it. I don't watch football, in fact I go out of my way to avoid it. I detest the sport with a vehemence you would not believe is possible. That's why I'm sat in the corner of this bar with my pint and the crossword.

How is it possible to dislike footy...I can see how some weirdos just hate all competitive sports but if you are a sports fan then you must see the appeal of the game of footy surely. I can see how people can prefer rugby but footy is such a frenteic but graceful game.BelperJon wrote:G'day Simon,

The applauding thing is a tradition...just like footy teams kicking the ball out of play when someone is injured.
rugby fans always go on about footy players cynicism and petulance...fair dos, I can see your points but it's just part and parcel of the game. In rugby I don't really like the deliberate attempt to injure opponents that are just part and parcel of the game. The are both cans-of-worms type issues.
Personally I can't wait for the forthcoming festival of football...worldwide sporting events like World Cups are things to be savoured.

Can't find much of BJ's points to disagree with.
Basically we watch football in spite of these drawbacks.
I wouldn't put it all down to money though. It's hard to find a decent Sunday Morning game these days as there is a lot of cheating and intimidation of refs going on there too!
