How did I get rid of dodgy Spam?

Post by simon redshaw »

I am getting some very dodgy and nasty spam coming through on my emails along the lines of that mentioned in the spam thread on the Fans and Chit Chat Forums. They come through every day. How do I get rid of them or stop them coming through? I am not sure how to block them through the Spam.

Anyone able to help?

Simon, is this coming to the email address you registered on this site with? Not sure whether you have seen any of the spam posts before they were deleted on here but did they look anything like that? What I'm trying to maintain is whether there is a link between the spam you are getting and the spam on the site, or whether it is a separate issue. If you think in any way it is linked to the spam on the site let me know immediately and I'll do something about it.

Meantime make sure that whatever spam filter you have for your email is on.

Iain, they are coming to the email address I registered on this site with. Was there one to do with sexual aids? Not meaning to be crude here but these are to do with Viagra and the likes and I don't want them on my computer or others to see that either. I am not interested in all that!!

I think it may be entirely different as somehow I must have logged onto that some time ago and they have my details. I did see some of the spam details that were mentioned on these forums and they were very dodgy and not pleasant.

I will make sure the spam filter is on and check that.

Thanks for all your help.

Iain, not meaning to come out with something really horrible and nasty in that last post. Its just the only way I can describe that sort of Spam that is coming through to my computer. I wanted to be upfront and honest. As I say, I don't like all that sort of stuff and must have logged onto the relevant site without knowing what I was doing. And I can say that HAND ON HEART.

Looks like you couldn't do any more, or the spam on the Forums is different but thanks again for your previous help and sorry I have had to post something embarrassing like this thread.

Thanks for that, Pam. :D Thanks for your explanation. Its horrible how those sort of people just use innocent people to peddle their junk.Sorry that you had to go through having all those sort of emails also and had to change your email addresses. :(

And no problems, you're fine in your last bit about the family forum which is why I am embarassed in this thread but needed help so you and Iain have been a big help. Cheers!! :D :D

Not a problem. Every email account gets spam sent to it somehow, there are ways and ways of sending it and finding your address from almost anywhere.

I used to get a lot of pop-ups, some accompanying this site. I have disposed of them completely by doing the following.

Hit Start
Then run
Type in 'MSCONFIG'.
Hit Startup
Then remove anything that you don't recognise.

Most rubbish attatches itself to the startup menu. This gets rid. I have been spam free for over a month now.

Be careful when doing this as you may accidentally stop something running that is legitimate and required. Many of the items have non-intuitive names and so it is easy to make mistakes. If you find that something isn't working afterwards try re-enabling (some of) the things that you have disabled.

An alternative (and usually safer) is to use one of the "cleanup tools" available. I think that Microsoft has one (I've not used it) but I have had success with Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Hope this helps,

Si.

Thanks all for your help. Brilliant. Cheers. :D :D

I have installed both the Adware from LavasoftUsa and the Spybot and this should increase my security no end.

I have Adware and Norton anti-virus but the spam continues to keep coming through. The trouble is you sometimes have to go into your spam to check nothing innocent has got through and you are greeted with the porn/viagra type spam.

Even using msn and chat room type sites, you will get adware stuff on your computer , you do not have to be looking at anything dodgy these days to get this spam, some of which the titles are very rude (to say the least).
