Is this season a Farce with the cancellations

Post by TigerFeetSteve » Fri Jan 08, 2021 10:24 am

Ok so far this year after 5 rounds a total of 153 points have been awarded to various teams.

24 points in total have been awarded to games affected by Covid so 15.7% of points in the season so far.

Of those points 89 points were from the first 3 rounds, where we had no cancellations due to covid.

64 points have come in the last 2 rounds, so since the new strain of the virus has appeared, 37.5% of points have been assigned by the panel not on a pitch.

We know this weekend looks like it's just losing the one fixture but that's likely not going to be the last game lost to it, during the 6N teams will be players light, so smaller outbreaks will force cancellations. How is this sustainable?
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

I think the plan is to cling on as long as possible, hope no single club is too affected, hope the vaccine & lockdown reduce the number of cancellations and hope that it was all worthwhile at the end!

It's certainly not a farce yet and we are (hopefully) at the worst point for cancellations, although the season probably will have far less meaning than others.

A lot of hope there,Whitty already let slip there will be restrictions next winter! This is the new norm I’m afraid so we all need to get used to it.

Whitty said that there MAY be a need for some restriction next winter but this is a long way off and not predictable in a meaningful way at this time.

What we have is far from perfect but much better than having no Premiership rugby played taking away the important revenue stream from TV broadcasts. Clearly the cancelled games will skew the Table a little which is an argument for ring fencing for this season and possible next season. I for one am enjoying much of the rugby on TV although clearly not as good as live games. Still, we have to be grateful for what we have in the current mess.

We have had at least 3 bouts of covid in the camp and no-one knows yet as to whether you can catch it twice or how long if any immunity lasts for but at some stage, the scientists will know if we are going to have "herd immunity" or if we are going to need to be vaccinated every year. If the priority has to be given every year in the current order - we may have to start the season in Jan every year as players are not going to be high up the list in order to avoid the chaos we have at present.
Hehehehehehehehe

The league and all other competitions are irrelevant this year (which is why there should be no relegation). Rugby and most other professional sport is being played so as the clubs can keep TV and sponsorship money and stay afloat. As such, however farcical it may seem, the matches will be played when safe enough to do so and that is how it needs to be for the time being.

At least rugby has been sensible and put in a place a system for awarding points for covid cancellations whereas football is just building and ever bigger backlog of fixtures to get through later in the season.

I'm not sure there's any problem in football saying it will reschedule games if it can. Rugby might regret not having a more flexible system in place if we get continued cancellations and multiple teams each week who are able to play are sat there twiddling their thumbs. There have already been missed opportunities.

Imagine you are a player & get a career ending injury in the current season, it would seem rather pointless.

What's the alternative? Stop rugby, players all made redundant or on furlough on £30k. Players normally on £100k plus all default on mortgages and have serious financial hardship, impacting the mental and physical health of them and their families. Is that any better?

Playing is still far from pointless for the players - put in good performances and they can enhance their reputations, increase earnings, develop their careers. None of that has changed.

I know what I'd rather do if I was a player...

I'm just content some rugby is being played at least.

As noted elsewhere on the forum , European competitions seemingly in doubt:

I just think the whole concept of playing sport doesn't fit with a National Lockdown.

It's way more than just socialising, a game of sport on the TV doesn't do anything to make up for the inability to see your family/loved ones.
