Nanny state
Now, apparently, drinking only one half of one unit of alcohol per day will save 4600 lives.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18262608
As I live in France, with wine at 2 euros a litre, I am now a lost cause, but half a unit is one quarter of a glass of wine, or one quarter of a pint.
(Or in Big Dai's case, just a lick of the brandy glass).
Why don't they just recommend we stop altogether and get it over with.
Hopefully you UK taxpayers are not paying for this ridiculous research!!

I could agree with you...but then we'd both be wrong.
Re: Nanny state
It's ludicrous. Amongst our customers are police men and women, plus two girls who work in the custody suite.
There is a massive problem with people who will drink up to 17 pints in a session, or will drink two bottles of vodka before even going out.
Of course, the middle class politicians, doctors and researchers find this all a bit too grubby to deal with, so they'd much prefer to piddle about with our taxpayers' money asking their peer group to drink half a unit a day.

Re: Nanny state
If the state wants to be a nanny then it should get its facts straight.
Trying to run two businesses, things were getting on top of me and I wasn't spending time looking after myself. Depression, anxiety, blood pressure, cholerstorol levels etc all a bit worrying.
Usng the doctor's advice I got all the vital signs back to A1. Amongst that advice was to take time out of the business once a day to do some vigorous excercise, which I did.
Now they've decided that excercise has no effect on depression at all.
They've also admitted that the "21 units of alcohol for and 14 for men and 14 for women" was completely made up and had no scientific or statistical basis. In fact if you drink between 24 and 60 units per week then you belong to a group that lives longer than T Totallers.
Of course there may be other factors, many T Totallers don't drink because they have a condition or have to take some strong drugs which react badly with alcohol.
So the point is, unless we have a government run by health experts, who understand how to interpret statistics, they should keep their ruddy noses out of it.

Steady. "They" have found that for those who are taking medication for depression excercise has no additional benefit!
So maybe the medication is inneffective??

There was an 8th century Buddhist dude called Shantideva who said:
“If the problem can be solved then why worry? If the problem cannot be solved worrying will do you no good.”
Much better advice that any old gonads that the Goverment's NHS tame doctors come out with.
But I still think a run at lunchtime clears the head!

Re: Nanny state
What always annoys me in all this what is, and what isn't, good for me is the effect that not having the enjoyment of a nice drink, or a nice bit of red meat, or full fat (eg tasty) milk etc would have on me - I would really be depressed if I stopped doing all the little things that make life fun.
Ah - fun! I knew that's what I'd forgotten. Officialdom can't let us have fun!
Reminds me of the words of a Californian friend of mine. As he pointed out, in California Heroin is illegal, but Methadone isn't. Since Methadone is just as addictive as Heroin but is used because it doesn't give you a 'high', all that California is actually legislating against is enjoying yourself and not against use of addictive substances! Don't you just love logic?
