Single Malt Whisky

Post by dj_joem »

Being a regular reader than poster I would gather that many people on here will have a decent knowledge of single malts. I would like to get my brothers a bottle of single malt whisky each for christmas. I'm on a bit of a budget but can anyone recommend anything other than the norm e.g. Glenfiddich, Laphroig,Glenmorangie & The Macallan etc. Would like something that you would not necessarily find in a supermarket. Many thanks in advance, Joe

Try a website called The Green Welly Stop - it has a huge range of whiskies.

My other half recommends Tam Dhu or Tomintoul.

Can't stand the stuff myself, but I've got friends who love it. I'd recommend that you look at ' Beers of Europe' http://www.beersofeurope.co.uk/acatalog ... y_321.html who, despite their name, have a huge range of spirits from all over the world (including my favourite corn whiskey). They also charge the same £7.49 however much you order - expensive for a single bottle but great when buying multiple cases of beer plus a couple of bottles! If you are anywhere near Kings Lynn they are well worth a visit: luckily I regularly have to visit Norwich so can drop in on the way there or back.

I seriously recommend the 10 year old Arran from this site. If you know your whisky, this Arran is something special.

Trust me.

A good idea is to look at the prices in supermarkets for a few weeks. Malts at £26 will be £18 or so a while later, Equally one bought reasonably cheaply may be a lot pricier later. In other words, prices vary! Worth looking over a period.

All a bit late now! Christmas is too close.

Anyway, time for a nice peaty Islay!

BJ makes a very good point. Personally I don't drink but we had a holiday on Arran a couple of years ago and stayed at Loch Ranza where this whisky is made.

We had a tour of the very tiny plant and met the most passionate people involved in producing it. We did bring some back as presents which were very much enjoyed.

Equally if you get the chance to go to Arran,do so - it is one of the most beautiful places we have been to.

I don't if it's the same in England, but Sainsburys in Dundee had a good range of something different, without the cost of postage.Edradour is one I would recommend,Morrisons had Singleton from speyside, most shops have Talisker from Skye, somewhere like oddbins who are specialists usually have a good sample.
Failing that Robinsons in Pitlochry do mail order and I guarantee they will have something you've never heard of.

I couldn't agree more, mate. :smt023

Mrs Beej's best friend from university owns and runs Kilmichael House in Brodick, the only 5-star hotel on the island. The first time we stayed with them was back in 1997 (no light pollution and fantastic views of Hale-Bopp). During this stay, we visited Lochranza and, like you, went on the distillery tour. It inspired me to order a case of the First Malt which became available in 2001 as a 5-year-old. Ever since then I've ensured I've got some Arran whisky in the house. I've also converted a few friends to this nectar.

Oh dear, you could be incurring the wrath of the Scots. When referring to that made in Scotland and Canada, it is spelt whisky whilst that from Ireland and the USA is spelt whiskey.

I can highly recommend a single malt whisky from the Bruichladdich distillery on the Isle of Islay.
