Three Cheers For Harry Carpenter

Post by Kinoulton »

The old fellow has finally popped his clogs.

At a time when we're having a few moans and groans about sports commentators, it makes you realise just how good he was.

And what better accolade can you have than the great Mohammed Ali saying: "I'd like to say, you're not as dumb as you look, Harry."
Kicks and scrums and ruck and roll.....Is all my brain and body need!

Oh for the day when commentators did just that, rather than "educate" us,RIP Harry one of the finest.
"If you want entertainment, go to the theatre," says Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill. "Rugby players play the game to win.15/1/21.

One of the greatest commentators and respected by many sportsmen. A sad loss.

Thanks for the memories.

Hear hear! Good thread Kinny.

I absolutely loved Harry's 'Get in there Frank!' moment during the Bruno v Tyson fight. There's something wonderful about a commentator losing all sense of impartiality in the excitement of the moment.
Barry Davies did it well too in the hockey final against Germany. 'Where were the German defence and frankly, who cares?'

Bill McClaren and Harry Carpenter - wonderful role models of commentators who just oozed love for their sport.
