Don't worry...............

By today's standards, if you can write out you're name you will get at least a 'B'.

Crack you're date of birth and the world is you're oyster.

Then go to a failed college that is now called a university, get deeply in debt, then leave and struggle to get a job on over the minimum wage.

Employers want commitment and a work ethic, not a 2/2 in media studies.

My lad shunned 'uni' and went to work.

After 18 months he is a Duty manager at a major retailer.

When I was young, to get to university set you apart and you appeared in the local paper. You then got a real profession.

Go out, work hard and see what you can achieve. Most degrees today are not worth the paper they are written on.

I'm currently at university and am there for the pure enjoyment of it, some people love to study and those people should be allowed to go to university.
It also shows employers that you can achieve something after three years of working hard, free thinking and sticking to deadlines- skills that employers love to see.

Each to their own.

I hope those who are waiting on A-level results are happy with what they get!

To a large extent I agree with Madoqua.

An exception that might prove the rule is my daughter who needed to get very good A Levels in order to do a Physics degree. She got the A levels, went on to do Physics, got a first class honours and then went on to do a PhD in Physics. Whilst doing her PhD she became something of an authority on spectroscopy to study metabolism which is now being used to understand more about diabetes. I think this is what a University education should be about.

(Incidentally, her team managed to show the awful things your body does to itself if you don't have breakfast. Take heed!)

She did note though, that whilst she would socialise like everyone else, and frequently went to rock concerts and student drinks nights, she had to be back in the lab by 5 a.m. the next morning preparing literally millions of pounds worth of equipment for the day's research ahead, whilst her fellow students who were doing Media & Art with Basket Weaving would just miss their one and only lecture that day and get out of bed at 3:15pm in time to watch Countdown.

Well, deride and belittle if you wish. *shrugs*

I am still a proud and happy mum this morning, my daughter achieved a B in English, B in drama and C in religious studies. She will be off to Worcester University on Sept 20th to study drama, performance and stagecraft ( anyone who thinks this is just standing about pretending to be a tree should try shifting scenery, rigging lighting, designing sets and costumes etc).
Her ultimate goal is to do a PGCE, then to have her own little company using drama and performance as therapy and confidence building for children with learning disabilities.

Particularly proud of achieving a C grade in religious studies as the teacher dismissed her at the end of term with the comment "well, if you get a D you'll be very lucky...I don't think you've got what it takes."

got my results this morning:

General Studies - A
English Literature - A
History - B
Politics - C

and will be off to Durham University in October time. Was pretty disappointed with Politics after i'd written at a high-A standard all year, though my teachers are enquiring into a series of dodgy marks so we'll see if that changes. Am a happy bunny and will be out tonight being very merry :-)

Wasn't deriding any courses Rizzo. I firmly believe that all subjects in "the arts" are vital. Whether it's history, performance arts, classical mythology or whatever, it must live on.

I was criticising those who take on a subject for which they have no real passion and which doesn't drive them to achieve anything much.

Believe me, having written and helped produce any number of musicals, I know what goes into it! And they were just amateur dramatic productions in front of 120 people. Gawd knows what it's like producing a big 'un.

It's ok Kinny, but having been told by numerous people today that "Exams are getting easier, the papers say so..." I get a bit teed off as I know how hard she has worked.

Congrats to Kornboy and well done.

Lets face it, exams are getting easier.

That doesn't mean that students don't have to work hard to pass them but they are getting easier to pass.

For a start, you can re-sit (in the same year) modules that you failed in order to improve your overall grade. Personally I feel that is wrong. I have no problem with re-sitting exams but if you re-sit you should have to re-sit the entire A Level & not just the one module you choose.

Similarly, I don't like the fact that "degrees" can be awarded for pretty much anything now, and from pretty much any tinpot institution who wants to call themselves a "university". That's not the fault of the students, but rather the fault recent governments who seem to think that everyone having a "degree" that is worth less (not worthless, but worth less) is better than some having a degree that carries real worth.

In my job I see so many kids leaving further/higher education & looking for employment while clutching lots of bits of paper telling me what they can do, littered with As, :censored: & references to their "degree" but who, in many cases, can't even spellcheck their CVs or can't explain how they spent their last 3 or 4 years productively!

Education has been devalued over the last 10 or 20 years, not by the students or teachers, but by the governments & target-setters who look only at the quantity and not the quality of what our education system has been spewing out.

I think congratulations all round to those with exam results. Personally being someone that is dyslexic I found exams very difficult and do not feel they reflect the true potential of some students.

So I feel those doing exams are brave just sitting them. Makes me feel funny just thinking about them! Well done all!
