Sitcoms

Post by Former Prop »

Whilst watching the 40th celebrations of Dads Army at the weekend, it got Mrs FP and I talking about sitcoms in general. My personal favourites apart from Dads Army, were Porridge, Some mothers do have 'em and of course Only Fools and horses.(All made pre mid 80's?)

Blackadder was good in its day, but I never really 'got' Fawlty Towers.

It made me think why can't they make decent comedies anymore? Does anybody think that any of todays sitcoms will still be being watched in 30+ years?

What are other posters favourite sitcoms, past or present?

Black Adder series 1, 2 and 4
The Good Life (not the documentary about the pie-eating No 10)
Didn't like Fawlty Towers too much, as it seemed to be more a treatise on mental illness
Of the ones going at the moment only Still Game will make me put down a book.
Some dodgy cod philosophy

Porridge
Open All Hours
Fawlty Towers
Yes Minister / Prime Minister
Father Ted
Phoenix Nights
Good Life
Men Behaving Badly
Rising Damp
Early Doors

And my overseas entry would definitely be Frasier.

Porridge – every episode still fantastic
Yes Minister / Prime Minister - love these, and so true to politics then and now
Good Life – love it – does Felicity’s bum count as soft porn?
Rising Damp – classic
Red Dwarf – lost it in the last series but apart from that, great fun
Dad’s Army – so much great stuff in there
I am neither clever enough to understand nor stupid enough to play this game

'The Office' and 'I'm Alan Partridge' are hardly from the golden generation of British comedy, but there's no doubting their quality and longevity.

Also, don't forget that for every 'Fawlty Towers' or 'Porridge' there was a 'Love Thy Neighbour' or 'Terry and June'. Desperate stuff.

I would also say that the later episodes of 'Fools and Horses' weren't a patch on the earlier stuff, and were a classic case of a comedy going way past its sell-buy date.

I agree fully with your comment about Only Fools and Horses.

Whats wrong with Terry and June :smt017 :smt003

The worst ever 'sitcom' of all time, IMO, is Last of the Summer Wine, Or the old actors retirement home, as I call it. :smt011

Any other contenders for worst ones?

Yes, (Prime) Minister
Blackadder
Fawlty Towers
Dads Army
Porridge
Are You Being Served?

Those are my favourites, all oldies.

Worst I can think of were:

Love Thy Neighbour
On The Buses
Till Death Us Do Part (Yes, I get the ground-breaking irony of the Alf Garnett character, but it was still about as funny as King lear.)

I forgot to mention, only Blackadder's 2, 3 and 4 are good. 1 is :censored:.

Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister
Blackadder - all the series but especially the Elizabethan one and I loved the pathos of the final World War I episode
and how about Tony Hancock? timeless comedy especially the blood donor (not sure how many posters can remember it though!)

like others, can't stand Last of the Summer Wine - great scenery and all that but it isn't funny and never has been.

Being young, I much prefer Men behaving badly and The Office, which was great! Fawlty Towers, which I have had to watch many a time simply annoys me. It's not funny! Whether that's due to my age could be it but that's what I think of it.

There aren't really anymore things like that around now.
