Musicals - Love 'em or hate 'em?

Kismet was actually based on an opera called @prince Igor' & 'adapted' for the musical. A guy called Borodin who was a chemist and wrote operas in his spare time. A lot of the songs for Kismet were taken from the 'Dances of the Polovtsian Maidens' from Prince Igor. There you go.
I went to see Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar when I was at school (my religious phase, I think!) - they were OK.

Yep, it is a naughty word here :)
I like Kismet because (a) I like Howard Keel in musicals and (b) it has a wonderful song called "The Olive Tree" which my Mum and I used to sing together. It's a song that means a lot to me.
JCS I remember seeing in the original movie format at the Oadby cinema (I am that old) and since then I've seen the more recent touring production seven times - only once with Glenn Carter who played the role on Broadway and in the DVD of the musical.

CT here's a snippet from some lyrics to Avenue Q - my favourite song.
BRIAN
It sucks to be me,
It sucks to be me,
It sucks to be broke
and unemployed
and turning thirty-three.
It sucks to be me.
KATE MONSTER
Oh, you think your life sucks?
BRIAN
I think so.
KATE MONSTER
Your problems aren't so bad!
I'm kinda pretty
And pretty damn smart.
BRIAN
You are.
KATE MONSTER
Thanks!
I like romantic things
Like music and art.
And as you know
I have a gigantic heart
So why don't I have
A boyfriend?
XXXX!
It sucks to be me!

lol! if i'd gone to see the rocky horror show with my parents, my mum would have been so embarrassing...cornish tigress wrote:That's true Jess, and it sounds like Rizzo's Avenue Q is similarly irreverant, so maybe I should try that. Wont take my son this time though, he's still not forgiven me for TRHS. Refused to go to the toilets all night!
Donncha O'Callaghan and Bruce Reihana are the best players that ever lived. Don't even bother to argue with me.
