DW....just come back from a week in Washington working and it never ceases to amaze me how many Americans know absolutely nothing about baseball !!....you imagine that their national game would be so popular, but its such a vast country and a lot of them don't know the teams, who has played, scores and who actually won !!

It's going to be a close call this year and I am so chuffed the Yankees were knocked out by the Tigers. ESPN were really going to town on Joe Torre possibly getting the chop and Lou Pinella coming back, but I think he's just been given the approval from the Yankees for his last year....they were also slating A-Rod (Alex Rodriguez) ...saying that he was rubbish and Torre dropped him to bat at number 8 against the Tigers and he just didn't perform. It would be nice to think that my beloved Red Sox would come in a sign him, after missing out on him when the Yankees were interested.

I would like to see St Louis win this year, they have been close in recent years and with Carpenters pitching and Pujols batting they have 2 cracking players....they deserve it, although if Detroit won it wouldn't surprise me, they have the momentum.

...while I'm on the subject of U.S. Sport, watched Reggie Bush get his first TD when we arrived at the weekend, what a touchdown that was....they guy is sheer quality.

Hi ww31, I hope you had a nice (working) trip.

I've never really worked out the A-Rod / NY thing. The fans and media don't like him (unlike Jeter, whom they adore). A-Rod is a confidence player, so its no surprise that he fails to cut it when the whole place is on his back. NY is the worst place possible for him, he needs to move, but it will take a ton of money to do it.

A Detroit v St Louis world series would probably be the neutrals choice, the Tigers having transformed from one of the worst teams ever and the Cards always seeming to be the bridesmaids. I see Detroit are winning game 3 at the moment, but still relatively early.

Reggie .... the man was truly great at the college level. I really hope he makes the transition to the NFL. I see Leinart had a good first start last week as well !

A fantastic climax to the Detroit / Oakland game last night. That's what I love about baseball; it can bring about such dramatic game situations.

Bottom of the 9th, game tied at 3-3 (A's having blown a 3 run lead), two men on base for the Tigers, Oakland one out from extra innings, Detroit one run away from the world series .... and the crowd going crazy. Great sporting theatre.

WT

Maybe. I am conscious that baseball is not to everyone's liking, and I have no issue with that.

Personally, I prefer not to post on those threads that are of little or no interest to me, unless I have an interesting take or constructive criticism to make. But as you have decided to join us on this thread .... may I ask how many games you have been to ?

I am, of course, assuming that you are already well versed in the art of paint drying, or even grass growing.

DW....what a fantastic game that was, and Ordonez certainly saved the drama for the last gasp didn't he ?!! ...what an ending to a game !! ....I fully expect the Mets v Cards to go down to the final game, with Glavine winning today and Carpenter for St Louis tomorrow....it could go either way....although whoever gets to the World Series, they will find it hard to compete against the tidal wave that is the Detroit Tigers....they have the momentum and you wouldn't bet against them now. Great stuff....shame the Red Sox aren't there though !!, they blew it back in late July.

When the Tigers host game 1 of the world series on Saturday night they will have had a whole week off. The Mets or Cards may only have had one day off at this rate.

Neither is ideal, Detroit may have gone 'cold' whereas their opponents may not be able to get their starting rotation sorted. Who is most disadvantaged ?

On a separate note, I see Kan Macha (Oakland A's manager) has paid the price for their tepid performance against Detroit. Fired !

Come on you Redbirds....I'm amazed. Still going to be tricky with the last two games in New York but considering their form in September they are doing amazingly well just to be at this stage.

Agreed. The Cards looked very lightweight in game 6; could well be Mets at Tigers on Saturday night.

WOOOHOOOOOO!

Go Redbirds! Kiss our Catholic asses (for in my mind the team in managed by the Pope and Cardinal Murphy O'Connor is the first baseman).

That is amazing....the Mets were so far above the Cards it's untrue....truly historic win that.

I didn't see it live...don't think I could have handled that 9th inning. Bottom of the 9th, Mets down by two, bases loaded and the Cards pitcher held his nerve!

Fantastic finish, wonderfully pitched game by the Cards. Baseball can engineer such great finishes, can't it ? I don't know how a closer can even stand up under that pressure, let alone even throw the darn thing !

So, an 'exhausted' Cardinals travel to a 'cold' Tigers (Detroit have been on ice for too long). I think you have to favour Detroit, who just look a better team all the way down. But you could have said that about the Mets ....

I hope the Cards win now....after near misses in recent years they deserve it.

Great pitching by Reyes....8 innings pitched , 4 hits and 2 runs....with Weaver against the veteran Rogers next the pressure is already on the Tigers....its going to be interesting to see how Detroit respond.
