Top Ten Batsmen

Post by simon redshaw »

Thought I'd start a series on the Top cricketers in each department. Remember the Top Ten is over the ages not just now. Who has influenced you from what you have seen or read?

Firstly, who would you rate as your Top Ten Batsmen?

well, i can only really pick top batsmen from now, as i haven't lived long enough to watch some of the true greats, and have only really followed cricket properly for the last couple of years (so forgive me if i make glaring errors)

1) Bradman
2) Lara
3) Tendulkar
4) i can't really think of any other all time greats at the moment, i'll come back to this later
Donncha O'Callaghan and Bruce Reihana are the best players that ever lived. Don't even bother to argue with me.

And - however good Imanol Harinordoquy is, he is still an idiot

Fair enough Jess, although judging by your top 3 I would say you've read quite a lot about cricket and watched a fair bit too and seen a fair bit of the archive material. And that's a compliment. What I mean to say is you're a very good student of the game.

I would agree with your top 3 although Inzamam would be challenging them.

i was thinking about inzamam, and ricky ponting too. I think Pietersen has the potential to join them, and Yousuf too.

What a task!

Don Bradman, Aus, 20's 30's 40's
Graeme Pollock, SA 60's 70's
Jack Hobbs, Eng, 00's 10's 20's
Len Hutton, Eng, 30's 40's 50's
Herbert Sutcliffe, Eng, 20's 30's
Ricky Ponting, Aus, current
Ken Barrington, Eng, 50's 60's
Wally Hammond, Eng, 20's 30's 40's
Sachin Tendulkar, Ind, current
Rahul Dravid, Ind, current
Gary Sobers, WI, 50's 60's 70's
Brian Lara, WI current

OK, that's 12. And I know 5 of them are English but they come from a long era when we were pretty good at the game!

BelperJon wrote:No mention of WG Grace or Sir Viv Richards yet? I am surprised. :?

My Top 10 would be (in no particular order except the first):

Sir Don Bradman
Sir Viv Richards
WG Grace
Sir Jack Hobbs
Sir Len Hutton
Sir Gary Sobers
Barry Richards
Zaheer Abbas
Steve Waugh
Wally Hammond
I notice you had the decency to put the Sir in each case whilst I didn't! When I was doing my list I was surprised at how many had been knighted.

Wot, no Boycott? Surely in anyone's top 10, old curmudgeon that he is. And I'd put Gower in there for pure style.

I don't know many of the older batsman, but i know one thing and thats most of the current good batsman are left ahnded, seems to be a genral trend,

To back up the point

Trescothic
Strauss

Lara
Chanderpaul
Graeam Smith
Langer
Hayden
Gilchrist
