From what I've seen on here lots of people, myself included have been crying out for Martin and Chessum in the second row. It was the position I believe they were originally set to play but injuries have meant they have slipped into the back row. The Starting 8 and replacements suggested by RB above would be my choice too.. really like the look of that and Chessum and Martin would offer a lot I feel at lock. Hoping that Henderson will feature far more next season too and he will add an extra dimension in the second row (although not the JL DP type player clearly)Rugbygramps wrote: ↑Sun May 08, 2022 7:26 pmI have always thought that should be our 2nd row pairing but was shot down by those who said NOOOO Martin is definitely a 6 who can play lock and Chessum the other way round. Not sure what decided that but stillRagingBull wrote: ↑Sun May 08, 2022 4:11 pm Watching Sale I feel 5 for us is a bit of a weakness, I like Snyman he's been impressive in the loose just lacks maybe a bit of bulk, Green technical but not as physical, Wells physical but not as technical.
Chessum has the potential for the other lock spot but we need that JL Du Preez factor player, I really do think Martin could be like that style he's bigger maybe another pre season of conditioning maybe the coaches will like he there.
1. Cronin, 2. Montoya, 3. Cole
4. Chessum, 5. Martin
6. Liebenberg, 7. Van Staden, 8. Wiese
Would be a physical unit for the big packs
16. Dolly, 17. Whitcombe, 18. Heyes, 19. Wells, 20. Reffell speed it up.

Henderson needs to fill out a bit more before being considered as a starting second row.

Yet to be convinced that Martin & Chessum could be a 2nd row partnership, its obviously Chessum & AN Other now (the 3 "senior" locks all have different plus points, what we don't have is a lump type lock), if everyone was fit at the moment I would want Martin in the 19 shirt.
Longer term in might become Chessum & Chessum..
Think of the classic 2nd row partnerships & they each have players that complement the other.

Re: LEICESTER TIGERS 2021/22 SQUAD/TRANSFERS/CONTRACTS: Aled Walters and the Philosopher's Stone
So next season what are we looking at something like this:
15. Steward
14. Potter
13. Moroni
12. Kelly
11. Watson
10. Pollard
9. Youngs
1. Cronin
2. Montoya
3. Cole
4. Chessum
5. Wells
6. Liebenberg
7. Van Staden
8. Wiese
Reserves 16. Dolly 17. Whitcombe 18. Heyes 19. Martin 20. Reffell 21. JvP 22. Burns 23. Cokanasiga
And during the International windows we will likely have something like:
15. Burns/Hegarty
14. Potter
13. Porter
12. Cokanasiga
11. Saumaki
10. Gopperth/Burns
9. JvP
1. Cronin
2. Clare
3. Cole
4. Snyman
5. Green
6. Liebenberg
7. Reffell
8. Cracknell
Reserves 16. Dolly/Vanes 17. Whitcombe 18. Heyes/TBC 19. Henderson 20. Jansen 21. Wiggleworth 22. Hegarty 23. Ashton
Full strength we look really well set. During the Internationals it's always a bit of a struggle but I think with players like Burns, Gopperth, Wigglesworth, Ashton providing experienced cover we should be ok. Cronin, Cole, Liebenberg and maybe Reffell being available throughout is a real bonus. Question marks over Heyes, Dolly, Wells, Scott as to their International involvements but I fully expect to lose England (Youngs, Steward, Chessum, Martin, Kelly) SA (Van Staden, Wiese, Pollard) Argentina (Moroni, Montoya).
Feels like we could do with another TH prop for sure. Hooker is an interesting one as we are well set with Montoya, Dolly, Clare and Vanes coming through but if Montoya and Dolly are away a fair bit on International duty we are pretty thin on the ground here. Full back is another position that's open for discussion. I very much doubt we will sign anyone to cover here but our best 2 15s (Steward and Watson) will likely both be away on international duty at the same time leaving Burns, Hegarty and maybe Ashton as cover which is fine I guess.
Shaping up nicely.. just need some announcements now...

I would not be surprised to see JvP as the starting 9 next season.

What makes you say this?
Cheering on the Tigers in Detroit.
Previously a slower, shorter, less good looking version of Tom Croft.

From the pictures I've seen, that may well have happened during his injury. Hard to definitely say but he looks a whole lot bigger.
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

Given his age he's ripe for filling out naturally. We saw it with Ollie Chessum when he came back for pre season bigger and more physical than he finished last season. Hopefully Henderson will be fit enough to get a game on before the end of the season.TigerFeetSteve wrote: ↑Mon May 09, 2022 5:52 amFrom the pictures I've seen, that may well have happened during his injury. Agree with RB, think Chessum and Martin should be the starting locks next season. Both have been in and around the Eng squad and will only get better.
Wells and Snyman have more than shown too they can dominate in a well drilled pack. Green will be invaluable experience too. Henderson is maybe a bit unknown but if he returns from injury in the same form he was before will be fighting for a 23 spot.

Because I think he’s good enough to and with Ben likely away a lot with England and/or being rested, then now is the time. Plus maybe a chance to bring a new guy through as well to get some experience as Wiggy will be playing less and less.

We need one of the second rows to call the line-out. I know Green does this when he's in the starting XV - not sure if Chessum or Martin have taken on that responsibility in a match before?
