6 Nations 2022

Post by No6_Flanker » Sat Jan 15, 2022 1:13 am

Nations are starting to name their squads for the 6 Nations. I’ve taken a stab at my England squad below:

Marler, Genge, M Vunipola - need a decent scrum before you can do anything else.
Cowan-Dickie, George, Blamire - tempted to go with Frost as the 3rd choice but Eddie will stick with Blamire.
Sinckler, Stuart, Heyes - a distinct lack of young scrummagers.
Itoje, Ribbans
J Hill, Ewels - for lack of a better alternative!
Lawes, T Hill - suits the Jones/Borthwick style 6.
T Curry, Underhill
Dombrandt, B Vunipola - let’s see if Dombrandt can replicate his form at this level.
B Youngs, Mitchell, Randall - Mitchell ahead of Randall due to his box kicking.
M Smith, Ford - Farrell out until he finds a running game.
May, Daly
Atkinson, Ojomoh
- a bit early for Kelly.
Slade, Marchant
Radwan, Hassell-Collins
- Hassell-Collins’ stats are too for the second season running.
Steward, Malins

Counted as injured: Launchbury, Martin, J Willis, Tuilagi, Watson.

Going to be an interesting selection for sure. First off I reckon neither Vunipola is going to be in the squad. Farrell on the flipside will 100% be in the mix.

Players who probably deserve on form to be included would be Collier, OHC and Lynagh. You have to say Cole should be there too, Sinckler and Stuart have hardly been tearing it up this season.

No6Flanker you've forgotten Quirke at 9 he's ahead of Randall and Mitchell.

Also Wells for Ewels, Also Launchbury and Tuilagi should both be fit, obviously we know nothing about Martin as he plays for Tigers!! :smt017
But if Martin is fit i think he will be in front of Hill.
Cole should obviously be ahead of Hayes, but to be fair only if he will be in the 23 otherwise may as well keep giving Hayes the experience.
I think Rudd will be ahead of Mako.
I'm sure Farrell will also be in there if he proves fitness and form for his versatility, the "problem" with Smith and Ford is they can really only play 10.

All interesting stuff....

A golden opportunity to consign Owen Farrell to the past, but has Eddie got the balls to do it? x2!!
Semper in excreta.

Time to move on from Farrell now in my opinion . He is not the best fly half or centre available and you can’t just pick him for his goal kicking.

Yes, I forgot to put Quirke in the injured list. He hasn’t been playing for Sale lately, although their latest team announcement said that he is 1 week away. The question is will he be match fit for the 6 Nations?

Which leads me to Launchbury and Tuilagi. If fit I would have both of them in the squad, as they are class, but to what extent do you pick players that have only just come back from injury - a long term one in Launchbury’s case? Maybe you pick them in the squad for continuity and see how they go in training?

Re: Smith and Ford only playing 10 - I don’t see that as a problem! Scrum halves only play one position. Given that Slade and Malins are likely to be in the squad (Furbank possibly too), I’d rather my fly halves were specialists!

I really don’t get this from Eddie. If the success of a team depends on the quality of the whole squad, and the competitiveness in training, why wouldn’t you have them in the squad? Surely Dombrandt can learn from Billy and vice versa which will make them both better players!

I don't think either Vunipola has been playing well and demanding a recall. We've got options at loosehead as well so Mako isn't really required.

Has it been confirmed Eddie has the 32 man squad and not just a 28 man one?

That’s fair, although I thought Billy was playing his way into some form of late. Who would be your number 8s?

Dombrandt and Simmonds. Dombrandt to start and then Simmonds impact from the bench with his ability to cover all three positions in the backrow. Underhill is surely unlikely after another concussion layoff. Curry will be in there somewhere and I'd have thought Lawes as well.
