London Irish (A) Sat 9th Oct

Post by ABClub »

After a brilliant start with 3 wins on the bounce we approach back to back away games with some of the Rugby Championship players potentially coming back.

I expect rotation to continue across both games as we saw against Sarries.

LI

1.Genge (c) 2.Dolly 3.Heyes 4.Wells 5.Chessum 6.Martin 7.Reffell 8.Liebenberg
9.JvP 10.Ford 11.Nadolo 12.Socino 13.Scott 14.Potter 15.Steward

16.Montoya/Youngs 17.van Wyk 18.Leatigaga 19.Green 20.Henderson 21.Youngs 22.Burns 23.Murimurivalu/Hegarty

I thought Chessum was excellent yesterday, would really like to see Wells and Chessum as a partnership. I thought Green had a really good game at the maul too (I think he's especially vital to our maul defence) so no slight on Calum, just rotating Wells back in.

Worcester

1.Genge (c) 2.Montoya/Youngs 3.Cole 4.Wells 5.Green 6.Chessum 7.Reffell 8.Liebenberg
9.Youngs 10.Burns 11.Saumaki 12.Scott 13.Porter 14.Potter 15.Steward

16.Dolly 17.Leatigaga 18.Heyes 19.van Staden 20.Wiese 21.JvP 22.Ford 23.Murimurivalu/Hegarty

Coley's had 3 starts on the bounce so I'd look to get Heyes game time and rest Cole for LI, then bring him back in against Worcester. If Sutherland is back by then that would be a really good battle between two excellent scrummagers and if Sutherland isn't fit then Cole can target Waller.

I think Kelly might get a couple of weeks on the naughty step but with Socino showing up so well that shouldn't necessitate Moroni being rushed back.

Montoya could be needed more urgently depending on Youngs and Clare's progress. Dolly has been terrific but is playing nearly 80 minutes each week which as a front row is tough in the modern game. Hopefully we get one of last seasons hookers back to give more rotation.

If Murimurivalu or Hegarty are fit then I'd like to see them get game time heading into the Autumn Internationals.

Would go for something very similar to be honest.

Would like to see Saumaki get another run out in hopefully slightly more favourable conditions but it’s hard to leave Nadolo and Potter (our best 2 wingers) out for a second week in a row. Think away to Irish will be the tougher match so I’d be tempted to start Nadolo and Potter despite my desire to see Saumaki again.. maybe he will get his chance away to Worcester. Muri at 23 for me unless he’s still unavailable then Hegarty would get the final spot.

2 very winnable games here but I just hope we don’t underestimate either side. No easy games and away games with fans are tougher still. Chance to notch up another few wins but the result is far from a foregone conclusion

........then there's the carpet factor?

Grass at Irish, carpet at Worcester. How does that affect the thinking?

Interesting stat in our Away game v Irish 2 years ago (2019/20 season)
All our backline in that game are not with us including bench
Out of the 23, 6 are still with us.

Both teams are playing well, we can't take them for granted, but I am happy that we now have strength in depth in pretty much all positions now, so the coaches can carry on, as they seem to be doing a better job than me at picking a winning side.

Looked at that, as I may be in the area. They’re billing it as a midlands derby! Really?!
In my defence, I was left unsupervised….

Thanks, burnie. Error typing there which I've corrected. Was meant to be Liebenberg starting and Wiese on the bench.

Interesting to see you rotating the locks a lot but staying steady in the back row. I think Martin, Reffell and Liebenberg have been excellent but if van Staden, Wiese or even Brink are in good shape I'd like to look towards rotating them.

Likewise with Dolly. He's stepped up superbly but is playing basically 80 minutes each week thus far.

I'm interested to see whether news about Hegarty or Murimurivalu carrying injuries comes out. I'd have expected one of them to feature against Sarries if fit with Steward rotated after being in the England camp.

Looking forward to Saumaki rotating with Nadolo. That's a really good position to be in to keep power on the left wing I think.

Well it depends when the SH players can play.

If they go back to SA and Argentina then both are in the red list and will have to quarantine for 10 days.

Same with Dolly when the others are fit.

It's nice to have good options to choose from instead of asking the fans if anyone has brought their boots.
