The other Code World Cup - Aus & NZ pull out

Post by TigerFeetSteve »

So looks like two out of the big 3 Rugby League nations may be pulling out of the world cup this Autumn

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/57925720

Surely this throws the whole thing into doubt doesn't it?

Feel sorry for the World Cup organisers to be honest, NRL clubs just using Covid as an excuse to keep their players.

Totally agree. Both NZ and Australia RU teams are touring the UK in the Autumn, I believe their cricket teams are also touring and they are at the Olympics.

I would think the RL Aussie/Kiwis players are embarrassed at this decision. To say it is too dangerous to go to the UK with all the protocols in place, virtually all the UK adult population double jabbed, presumably all the players jabbed.....what exactly are they afraid of?!

Half the South African team had covid two weeks ago, now they are all picked to play in a full blown Test match on Saturday.....the danger to fit young men is miniscule (especially when everyone is vaccinated).

If NZ and Australia prefer to pursue a zero covid policy, they will spend many years yet in virtual isolation and their economies will be trashed, and their mental health permanently affected.

They should reverse this perverse decision and take part in what should be a great spectacle of rugby league.

Considering Australia’s (I don’t know about New Zealand) vaccination program is pretty poor, they’ll be forced to continue with a zero Covid policy until that changes.

However personally I believe this is more to do with the NRL clubs wanting more time with their players than pandemic policy or politics.

As The All Blacks and Wallabies are touring this Autumn, this is much more about ARL clubs flexing their muscles.
It will be interesting to see how the governing body responds .
It’s not just about the men’s game but their responsibility to the Women and wheelchair games

Just what RL needed as a game, not that the NRL gives a damn what happens outside of their league

I wouldn’t criticise anyone right now for decisions like this. Some say we might be in lockdown by Sep.
The only way forward I can see to make any real difference is to target the 12-18 year olds, along with the autumn booster for the rest of us. Otherwise we’ll be stuck in this never ending cycle of uncertainty, not just with sport but with most sectors of everyday life.

Under the cover of Covid ?
No one can blame a safety first approach in these times however there appears an awful lot of inconsistencies and incongruities associated with the stance of Australia and New Zealand in this instance.Even in the respective countries there is much consternation at the choice made with many suspecting a 'political 'and/or parochial decision guided by the influence of the NRL.
Hopefully the Tournament continues regardless - it is bigger than those wishing to harm it.

You also have to remember that the Aus and NZ unions aren't flush with cash. They can't afford to pull out of arrange fixtures and not go on tours.

Don't always agree with you but given the info from daughter (nurse) and staff in A & È on Friday, you are on the money there.

Somewhat strange though considering the NZ cricket team were on these shores for a considerable time and there are a few Kiwis and Aussies playing both County cricket and in the 100
