Steve Borthwick - Lions

Post by Old Hob »

According to the Times today, Steve Borthwick has indicated he is no longer available to coach on the Lions tour as it would involve too much time away from Tigers during crucial points at the end of this and the beginning of the next season. Rowntree and Andy Farrell have also withdrawn .

Indeed, Steve seems to be a true ‘all or nothing’ kind of guy. You can’t give your all to two causes

Will the FFR and La Rochelle allow their release? Shaun Edwards hasn’t been on a Lions tour since 2009 so I doubt the permutation was put into his contract with Les Bleus. My guess would be Scotland’s defence coach Steve Tandy.

Great commitment from the boss man, that'll only reinforce what he's instilled in the lads so far...
No, not that one!

Remember, whatever you do to the smallest of the backs you do to his prop, and you can't avoid the rucks and mauls forever...

I know you don't like it when I boo him but how else will he know he's wrong?

I'm increasingly impressed with SB. I think he's been a great appointment. I really think he's the man to get us back to something like the powerhouse we once were.

IMO not just shows commitment but shows for me he seems to really be enjoying this.
No one would've blamed him for going.

Good call. While I wouldn't begrudge him the opportunity, this sends a good message to everyone else at the club.

I'm loving Borths work, at this rate of improvement we could be a real force next season!

Preseason will be critical in how we can build on our improvements this season to becoming contenders again. Glad to see Steve is fully committed to the cause. There is plenty of time for him to coach at Lions level.

Quote from Wales online on the matter
It’s understood lineout expert Borthwick - forwards coach in 2017 - declared he was unavailable after being presented with the full Lions schedule, given his duties at Leicester.
I wonder if the itinerary plus Quarantine periods mean it's a lot longer away from the UK than was thought when first agreeing to it. Rowntree has also supposedly pulled out due to family commitments so I'm guessing it's a longer tour all in than when initially pitched to them...
