I wondered who was actually Refereeing the game as the TMO was constantly advising and despite those obvious fingers under the ball shown on the screen Karl Dickson still awarded the try. I do not rate Dickson as he was promoted as a past player into Refereeing without the skill base. Where as Adam Leal was the opposite a few weeks ago.
Deans comments ~ Newcastle director of rugby Dean Richards:

"There just didn't seem to be consistency in the (refereeing) decisions in the first half, but in the second half we picked it up a bit.

"We just wanted to play a bit more with ball in hand as in the first half we tried to do too much from within our own half and George Ford, of course, kicked well throughout to pin us back.

"But in the first half, I was with the players on how hard done by they felt, it seemed there was a pre-conceived idea of how they were going to referee the game."

That is a new expression "pre-conceived idea" great. :smt023

Falcons try was clearly held up on the angles that we saw. Dickson said he saw a grounding of the ball so no reason to not award the try. No pictures were shown from the view that he would have seen.

If the ref is clear he has seen a grounding, why would he reverse that on the basis of a camera shot.
Presumably from up close Dickson was satisfied that the hand did not completely prevent grounding of the ball.

The elbow/obstruction was an example of weak refereeing- he saw the same video of the incident as the TMO but allowed himself to be overruled by the TMO. The collision was immaterial to the try being scored. Accidental obstruction that occurred 25m from the try did not affect the defence. If it was really an elbow then it would be penalty and red card. You can’t pick a sanction mid way between you and the TMO. It is one or the other. No sanction or red card.
