Harry Simmons - Scrum Half?

Post by rugbym4dmike »

Anybody know what has happened with Harry Simmons, I remember thinking about three years ago that he would be the natural successor to Ben Youngs, but SB has only used him as a winger on the odd occasion and he looks about as happy as Elliot Daly at fullback?

I thought he has looked good on the wing.

Apart from the daft trip he's done well on the wing...

Tbh I like the thought of him when we put out a 6-2 bench in the team. Having someone who can cover the specialist position that is SH and be just as home in the back 3 is a huge asset.

We have some really good Scrum halves with JVP coming through too I think his future for us (if he stays with us) lies primarily on the wing.
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

There's a double-page article on Harry in last weeks match programme saying he's now considered a winger. I think he'd also make a decent fly half myself!

Really strong talent that seems to confuse a few.
Personally given the general shortage of English centre options I think he could make a real go of it.

Simmons is very quick and has demonstrated a nice step too if I remember correctly. He is decent under the high ball and has a good kick on him.

As others have said, I think he’s looked very good on the wing for us and will only improve with regular exposure IMO.

A strong back three player and one I would love to keep a hold of long term.

I too think has looked decent on the wing. I seem to remember that JvP started against Sale instead of him in the GM era because Simmons didn’t have a good box kick.

and the fist box kick JVP took in that game got charged down for a try!

Best pass from a ruck on the resumption of 19/20 season was by Simmons.
It would be interesting to find out why the move away from 9.
Not sure he is the winger for the hoof & chase game plan...then again neither is Nemani.
To win is not as important as playing with style!

I think its very sad that Simmons is no longer considered as a SH, I rated him much higher than White, he was shoved down the pecking order, wrongly in my view. JVP coming through looks very good, sad for Simmons, I don't think White is the future, as I have said before.

I may be mis-remembering, but didn’t he lose the best part of a season with glandular fever?
I agree that before that he was looking like Lennie’s natural successor, but that seemed to drop him down the pecking order, and JVP has taken a step up.

If Borthwick regularly goes for a 6-2 split on the bench then Simmons would be great as back up for the wing, scrum half and even fly half.
I’d also like to see Wigglesworth only play if White and JVP get injured.
Wigglesworth can be a really useful assets as a kicking\ scrum half coach.
Our youngsters must be given the chance to play and develop.

Ironically Simmons versatility and ability could play against him...
always rated him as a Scrum Half , and obviously still has the ability to play there. As a winger however he possibly could be even more gainfully employed as he possesses the one asset all defenses fear - raw speed.
what ever , as with others vying for position and selection I hope he gets the opportunity and does not get lost in the shuffle.
Seemingly heading rapidly toward senility .....Not long or far to go now , in fact, getting worse daily.....

Yep remember thinking it was a bit ironic. If he doesn’t have a good box kick then not surprising Borthwick won’t pick him at scrum half.
