Covid could really see this season descend into a lottery...

Question, if the French clubs say pull out of the European, it would give Tigers and Newcastle a week off in a week and a half's time, any chance of that game actually being played then instead?
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

Tigers v Newcastle result has already been decided and the agreed rules for this season state that games cancelled due to COVID will not be rescheduled.

Any pretence that our sport has become anything other than part of the entertainment industry went out the window with the introduction of the play-offs. Not trying to flog that particular dead horse, but the stated aim was to add a grand final highlight to the end of the season. Games get criticised for being dull, and law changes/interpretations come along to make it more entertaining.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love my team to lift a trophy, any trophy, but let’s not fool ourselves.

However, the season is absolutely already a lottery. In a normal year, one bad game, through whatever reason, in May defines them. And we can often find a reason, outside of our control, for us losing a match! But as long as there’s sport to watch, we go along with it, whether we like the season structure or not.

This season has just been a more extreme example. I no longer feel that our league is there to decide the best team, it’s there so we get lots of chances to put coin in the coffers. Europe is so much of an uneven playing field, that it’s pointless to compare teams most of the time. I watch because I love the game, no matter what. And Playoffs, Covid or whatever comes along, I will continue to do so.
I find your lack of faith......disturbing.

I agree, it is all about finance these days. With a congested fixture calendar and the enormous risk associated with foreign travel, surely there was a more than compelling argument to make the 2 European competitions direct knock out tournaments played home and away this year. This would shorten the tournament in this busy year and also significantly reduce the need to travel. That, however, would not produce enough matches to fill the TV schedules.

Alternatively, common sense may suggest that a pool stage played between clubs in their home or neighbouring nations would have been preferable with the pool winners moving on to a knockout phase. Again, travel reduces and so risk reduced.

Extreme views I know but, as with all sports and not just rugby, some thought needed to be put in to international competitions this year rather than plough on with the existing, more risky formats.

This season for me is a series of individual games. the league might look better if no more games are called off due to covid, but I'm just happy seeing good performances from Tigers at the moment. A chance of a trophy come the end of the season is just a bonus reason to maybe have a beer!

I'm a bit sceptical of the "derby game" factor (isn't it really just something hyped up by broadcasters to promote their product?) and even more so when there are no crowds and almost none of the players involved are from the area. The game will be won on exactly the same things as any other Premiership game which do include belief and the will to win, along with discipline, organisation, accuracy, fitness etc.
Agreed. I don't think that this will really matter more than any other game, except to the fans, the media and maybe the Youngs brothers, who have been at the club long enough to understand the rivalry. The interview with Wiese was a classic example after the game, where he was asked if he'd been told about the rivalry with Bath and Northampton and he replied with something along the lines of "one of the boys mentioned it yesterday, how much these derby games mean to the club". So it's not really being mentioned much around the training ground. I suspect they're focused on the what Tiglon mentions above, getting things right rather than the history of the match itself.
He said Lenny (Ben Youngs) told him

Saints are due to make a statement later today, presumably after they have the test results from the contact tracing.

Watching elite sport has for me been a bit of a saviour during Covid.

I could survive without of course, if it was deemed the long term risk of health to the participants was too great.

Tough times, tough decisions for everybody.

Well we got 10 points from Falcons, Bath and Saints.
Honestly last year would've been thrilled but really think with the way we have been playing you might have won all 3 and looked convincing.

Real shame as Taufua and a few other are training now.
