Marcus Smith

Post by chipnchase »

Rumours of Marcus Smith leaving Harlequins at the end of the season have started to circle with a move to France or Bath being banded about.

The question is would you take Marcus Smith in place of George Ford for the next three years?

No. The main reason being is that the squad needs as much continuity in player selection as international/injury makes it feasible. Fordy's got Tigers DNA, top level international experience, great leadership skills and above all a lot of years left in his career.

Henry, Bonilla, McPhillips, Hardwick (in theory)......so I would say no.

This would be the 27 year old George Ford who's arguably the best 10 in England and probably approaching his best years?

I’d take Smith, on the basis that whilst we’ve seasoned internationals in midfield, we don’t have someone with the kind of flair and pace that Smith brings in addition to his impressive all round skill set, that will challenge defences in different ways.

No thank you. Henry as a back up to Ford is a more than able deputy and should be getting plenty of game time in the next few months.
Anyway, whoever signs Smith will have to fork out at least a 250,000 salary!

Just have a feeling Henry will turn out to be the equal of Smith or better. To me he has considerable potential.

Who knows when Ford will be fit again, in an ideal world he wont be able to get straight back into the starting line up.

Henry is 26 and hasn't shown much game management skills yet for Tigers. I'd probably swap him right now for Smith.

That's being rather rough as he's only played a handful of games for a lacklustre Tigers' team, and from what little I've seen of him he deserves more opportunities in the 1st XV.

...would Smith want to come here to sit on the bench?
We could not afford Smith, the only way we get him is if we release Ford and he comes in as number one. I believe Ford is the better player, should be our skipper, he is at his peak....no contest!!
