European competitions

Post by Robespierre »

It's Quarter final time this weekend in both the Champions' Cup and the Challenge Cup.

Here are the fixtures, and I reckon that we'll see home wins all round (particulartly at Welford Rd!)

Champions's Cup

Saturday Leinster v Saracens
Clermont v Racing

Sunday Toulouse v Ulster
Exeter v Northampton

Challenge Cup

Friday Bristol v Dragons

Saturday Bordeaux v Edinburgh
Toulon v Scarlets

Sunday Tigers v Castres

I think one of Sarries or Racing will win away.

Saints are going to get minced.

Challenge Cup much more difficult to call though I still think one away team will prevail. Perhaps Edinburgh or Castres.

Trip to Toulon again looks likely,

Saturday 26 September
SF 1: Winner RC Toulon/Scarlets v winner Leicester Tigers/Castres Olympique
Kick-off: 20.00 UK time or 21.00 French time
TV: BT Sport/S4C/FR 4/beIN SPORTS

Semi-final 1
If RC Toulon (ranked No 1) and Leicester Tigers (ranked No 4) win their quarter-finals, Toulon will have home venue advantage

If RC Toulon (ranked No 1) and Castres Olympique (ranked No 5) win their quarter-finals, Toulon will have home venue advantage

If Leicester Tigers (ranked No 4) and Scarlets (ranked No 8) win their quarter-finals, Leicester will have home venue advantage

If Castres Olympique (ranked No 5) and Scarlets (ranked No 8) win their quarter-finals, Castres will have home venue advantage
Hehehehehehehehe

I really doubt Saracens can pull one off against Leinster, they will probably field a team something like this:

1. Barrington
2. George
3. Koch
4. Itoje
5. Kpoku
6. Rhodes
7. Clark
8. Vunipola
9. Davies
10. Vunipola
11. Maitland
12. Socino
13. Taylor
14. Segun
15. Daly

They'll be very competitive but Leinster should be able to win it in my opinion.

I think Alex Goode will be selected at fly half in the absence of « he who can do no wrong in the eyes of Eddie Jones »

I'm not sure, my moneys on Sarries. For all their faults, they're one hell of a team when they hit form.

TBH Cardiff Tig, I think there’s more chance of Newport Dragons winning the Challenge Cup than Sarries winning at Leinster!

I've got a feeling that the French clubs may struggle a bit this weekend, they're a lot fewer matches into their restart, I'm certainly hopeful that Castre will struggle, but I expect a couple of surprises in French clubs losing...
Used to run around with an 11, 14 or 15 on my back.

Believe this one is a bridge too far for Sarries. Part of me would like to see them get through , but just can't see it.
Leinster will be a tough nut to crack for anyone in this competition .

Part of me wants to see them to lose by 50 and to never be seen in any rugby competition again, the other part of me wants them all banned for life!

Allez les Scarlets! One would expect Toulon to win at home but Scarlets are in with a chance.

The Toulouse squad v Ulster:

15. Ramos ; 14. Huget, 13. Guitoune, 12. Ahki , 11. Kolbe; 10. Ntamack, 9. Dupont ; 7. Cros, 8. Tolofua (cap), 6. Kaino; 5. Tekori, 4. Ro. Arnold ; 3. Faumuina, 2. Mauvaka, 1. Baille.

Banc : 16. J.Marchand, 17. Neti , 18. Aldegheri, 19. Meafou, 20. Placines, 21. Holmes, 22. Bales, 23. Lebel

Ulster: Lowry; Lyttle, Hume, McCloskey, Stockdale, Burns, Cooney; McGrath, Herring, O'Toole; O'Connor, Henderson; Reidy, Murphy, Timoney.

Replacements: Andrew, O'Sullivan, Moore, Carter, Treadwell, Mathewson, Faddes, Matthew Rea.

Toulouse will start favourites but this match could be close.

Clermont v Racing.

Clermont's team has yet to be announced.

The Racing squad:
15. Zebo; 14. Dupichot, 13. Vakatawa, 12. Klemenszac ; 11. Imhoff; 10. Russell, 9. Iribaren (cap); 7. Sanconnie, 8. Claassen, 6. Lauret; 5. Leroux, 4. Bird, 3. Colombe Reazel, 2. Chat, 1. Ben Arous.

Replacements : 16. Baubigny, 17. Kolingar, 18. Oz, 19. Ryan, 20. Chouzenoux, 21. Machenaud, 22. Gibert, 23. Trinh-Duc.

I mentioned earlier that I thought this would be a home win for Clermont, but Racing's recent record against Clermont is good and their side may be too strong.
Racing by a gnat's cock!
