In purely rugby terms yes. I don't know how much money was on the table or what personal stuff was involved though. If you are unhappy somewhere then you'll look for a way out and maybe he was sold a dream with a decent salary to accompany it. There's some other English players there to help him settle so he wouldn't have been entirely on his own.

The move to Montpellier might prove more beneficial to his development.

Toulon 25 Bordeaux 19
Agen 14 Racing 54
Brive 28 Castres 33
L Rochelle 51 Pau 27
Montpellier 23 Bayonne 19
Toulouse 36 Clermont 27

10 Montpellier 25/54
11 Brive 25/51
12 Bayonne 25/45
13 Pau 25/41
14 Agen 25/2

Round 26 and the last matches before the playoffs is next Saturday at 21h00 and there's lots at stake regarding playoff and relegation.

Bayonne v S Français (SF need to win to make the playoffs and Bayonne need to win to avoid a relegation playoff. Nice!)
Castres v Toulon (both need to win to be in with a chance of the playoffs!)
Clermont v La Rochelle (Clermont must win to ensure a playoff place!)
Lyon v Agen (will Agen get their first and only win of the season?)
Pau v Montpellier (Pau must win to avoid a relegation playoff and Bayonne lose without a bp)
Racing v Brive (Racing are assured of a playoff place and can afford to rest key players)
Bordeaux v Toulouse (Bordeaux are also assured of a play off place and Toulouse need a win to finish in 1st place)

The ProD2 season will come to a close next weekend in Montpellier when two former greats will meet in the final, Perpignan and Biarritz. Perpignan easily disposed of Oyonnax at home by four tries to none (27-15) and Biarritz (captained by Steffon Armitage - remember him?) who were trailing 27-33 after 80 minutes away to Vannes, scored a converted try in extra time to win in the dying seconds.
The winner will play Top14 rugby next season and the loser will play a one-off match at home against the side finishing 13th in the Top14 - currently Pau, but if Pau beat Montpellier in the last match next weekend and Bayonne lose at home to playoff hopefuls Stade Français, then Bayonne will play for their Top14 existence, and possibly against arch rivals Biarritz! Now that would be a juicy encounter!!!

Elsewhere, another former Top14 side, Narbonne, have gained promotion to ProD2 from Fédérale 1 along with Bourg-en-Bresse. Soyaux-Angoulême and Valence Romans are relegated from ProD2 to Fédérale 1.

Perpignan (former Tiger, Perry Freshwater is forwards coach) beat Biarritz 33-14 in the ProD2 final and will be in the Top14 next season. However, all is not lost for Biarritz, who will travel to either very near neighbours Bayonne, or Pau who are only an hour away for a do or die match to decide who plays in the Top14!

Had a couple of very enjoyable visits to Perpignan and their supporters club, first with Scarlets (late wife Llanelli born, bred and die-hard supporter) then with Tigers. Walking to the ground through a quiet, well-to-do suburb with their typically noisy, small band (with large drum) was so incongruous :smt005. The hospitality was fantastic and very generous and wouldn't accept any money towards the huge amounts of food. Hopefully our paths will cross again.

We now know the Top14 play-off matches, including a mouthwatering Paris derby!!!

Friday June 11th Racing v Stade Français at 21h00 (the winners will meet La Rochelle in the first semifinal on Friday 18th at 21h00))
Saturday June 12th Bordeaux v Clermont at 21h00 (the winners will play Toulouse in the second semifinal on Saturday 18th at 21h00))

The final is on Saturday 25th June at 21h00 in the Stade de France.

At the other end of the table we know two teams who will play for the right of playing in next season's Top14. Another derby, but in the Basque country! Bayonne who lost narrowly at home to Stade Français 9-12 and finished 13th in the Top14 (Pau secured a dramatic bonus point win at home to Montpellier to climb above Bayonne on points difference) must travel to near neighbours and bitter rivals Biarritz who were runners-up in yesterday's ProD2 final against Perpignan. The match is on Saturday 12th at 17h30. The stakes are enormous, a place in the Top14 for the winner and ProD2 for the loser, so Stade Aguilèra will be no place for the faint-hearted on that day as there is no love lost between these two clubs and no quarter will be given or expected!

Perpignan supporters are indeed reputed to be among the most passionate and colourful!
