Leon Lloyd deserves a mention as a 13 too. Played more on the wing but started a lot of games at outside centre in very good sides.

His lack of England caps mean Lloyd often gets forgotten when discussing the great Tigers sides but he was a brilliant player. His two tries against Stade in the 2001 HC final sticks in the mind for sure.

Leon was far better than some who won England caps..
Tim Buttimore was pretty rapid.
A certain R Underwood played the odd game at 13 as well.
Dossers Lad could shift as well.

All of those mentioned were good but imo not world class and would not say they had pace to burn

Ollie Smith was a British and Irish Lion and was about as quick as centres get. Certainly faster than Manu/Slade/Dingwall and most other centres out there at the moment.
Never believe generalisations

Matt Smith was the fastest over 30m at one time, faster than Varndell, pointed out by Cockers once.
Leicester Tigers 1995-
Nottingham 1995-2000
Swansea (Whites) 1988-95
A game played on grass in the open air by teams of XV.

Most players with " pace to burn " are put on the wing, few guys running at full throttle have the composure and balance to throw an accurate pass or change direction, unfortunately many can't do that at a slightly slower pace.

Unfortunately an English trait...watch any level of NZ rugby the skill level is vast.

I know he was a 12, but Daryl Gibson....what...a....player. Defensive leader, superb communicator and the glue that held our amazing backline together. Oh for another Gibson.....

I didn’t know that - interesting as Smith always looked fast in his younger days but I didn’t realise how fast!

Favourite Ollie Smith memory (probably the obvious one) was his try against Munster but he scored a fair few on that Outside arc

Think that was the game where Castro celebrated winning a scrum at thomand park like he’d won the World Cup

Ah happy days

Allen was similar, I’m hoping Scott will develop along similar lines - he’s looked good so far

Yep. But for injury he’d probably have replaced BOD at 13 in the 2005 side. Criminally ignored by England. I never thought Hipkiss offered quite as much as Ollie Smith, but he was still bad enough to play in a RWC Final! :smt003
