Re: Exeter Chiefs
Seemed like a great idea for marketing in 1999.....
Seemingly heading rapidly toward senility .....Not long or far to go now , in fact, getting worse daily.....
Re: Exeter Chiefs
Its links to the Leicestershire Regiment which served in India...
Formerly of Burbaaage (not Inkleh), now up north at uni
Re: Exeter Chiefs
I quite like the idea of keeping the name Chiefs, but reverting the brand to Exeter’s Celtic roots. This is the suit of issue the RFU to should be pushing to solve, not whether we should sing “Swing Low” or not.
Not only does their branding promote outdated, incorrect racial stereotypes, Exeter has no link to the indigenous peoples of America and the Tomahawk Chop (which even most fans agree should be removed) is just plain annoying.

Re: Exeter Chiefs
I think their name should be Exeter Chiefs.
Re: Exeter Chiefs
Why not just remove the indigenous branding and retain the name Exeter Chiefs?
Re: Exeter Chiefs
Yes, Its the branding that is the issue, not the name
find a better way of life, http://www.marillion.com
marillion 19, coming ....er not sure..

Re: Exeter Chiefs
Absolutely, the issue for the more Politically correct out there, is the emblem, not the name.
Personally I don’t see how it matters, but if they want to keep the name just change the emblem to Chief Wiggum from The Simpsons.

Re: Exeter Chiefs
In true rugby style concentrate on the beer, Exeter Otters, should be good for a few quid in sponsorship. Personally i see nothing wrong with Chiefs or the branding but stop that blooming dirge they call the tomahawk chop.
Re: Exeter Chiefs
if they cannot be chefs any more it should be cooks
Re: Exeter Chiefs
Political correctness gone too far.
They are not using the term Chiefs in a racist or negative way.
However there is a case for asking what on earth the link is Exeter have with North American native tribes! In much the same way as Sale has to do with sharks.
I've never been a fan of teams adding a suffix to their name when there is no historic basis. Falcons, Sharks, Bears.... and I include Chiefs in this list.
Leicester have had the name Tigers for a very long time and has possible/probable links to the regiment of the same name.
Likewise Wasps were known as that from the beginning it isn't a trendy add on to the name.

Re: Exeter Chiefs
Never mind the branding - would the Tomahawk Chop have to go?
Re: Exeter Chiefs
Chief is used as a greeting, so is lover.
Just alter the pic to something the fans vote for, and ban the dirge. My sibs hate it, and they're North Standers. Given the profile of many fans these days a offshore island flag would do
And please give up using the Maoist/Daily Mail "PC gone mad" trope.

Leicester Tigers 1995-
Nottingham 1995-2000
Swansea (Whites) 1988-95
A game played on grass in the open air by teams of XV.

Re: Exeter Chiefs
That is a coincidence that perhaps cemented its use. It started being used for us when we played in brown and yellow stripes.
Goooooodeeeeeyyyyy!
