NZ Only Super Rugby in the works

Post by JP14 »

Yet to have a government approved start date, but a continuation of Super Rugby with just the 5 Kiwi franchises will hopefully happen soon, they have had the coronavirus quite a bit less severe so are coming out of lockdown a lot quicker.

Plan is to have no finals but just a FPTP system.

Would be nice to see some rugby.
I suppose as far as the virus is concerned it helps when your whole country’s population is roughly half of Greater London

It's also easier to contain a virus with some proper leadership & a plan.

It's also easier to contain a virus when your population density is fewer than 50 people per square mile (NZ), than if it's over 700 (UK).

Maybe that's more of a factor than (insert name of politician/organisation/social structure that you have arbitrarily decided is the the root of all the country's/world's problems here).

Are you Stuart Barnes in disguise, he likes to take every opportunity to have a dig.

Whoever was in government they would have taken advice from exactly the same people

Definitely not Stuart Barnes I don't drink red wine.
Personally I think the way parts of the world have dealt with this crisis is disgraceful, but at least we are not the USA..

It certainly does help to have a sparsely populated country but politics aside it will be nice to have some live rugby.

Maybe Sky could do a deal with BT or Channels 4/5 to broadcast one of the games?

A spread out population can help though you'll still get population density in places like Auckland. Early introduction of tough measures coupled with good testing also helps. A government that initially takes the threat seriously being a massive help.

Be good to see some rugby back going on. There had been some talk about keeping NZ and Australia closed off but allowing travel across the Tasman Sea. Could see some Australia Vs NZ games if the NZ only games go well.

Would be great if/when live sport starts across the globe it is made available for all to view, but sport is such a cash cow for Broadcasters its unlikely.

There are only a few things I miss from not having a Sky/ BT subscription, Tigers games, NZ rugby & John Oliver.

Super Rugby Aotearoa confirmed...

10 weeks remaining of Super Rugby will be played between the 5 Kiwi franchises over 20 games once the New Zealand confirm what date their “COVID-19 alert level 2” (second stage of exiting lockdown).

Some good news finally!

Yes, it will be easier to contain a pandemic in a less densely populated country, but Japan is also an island, is more densely populated than the UK, is far closer to the geographical origin of the virus, and yet has far fewer cases of the virus (16,000) than the UK (223,000) to date.

New Zealand also locked down their population far quicker, and far more strictly than the UK did. Even now, their eased lockdown level is no less strict than the UK's current position! Plus they have an enforced international travel ban, whereas the UK still has open borders and no self-isolation requirements (yet) for people arriving/returning from overseas!

NZ's lockdown is so strict that a Samoan rugby team returning home on 16th March via Auckland after playing in Perth just before the border closure are still stuck in NZ and won't be flying back to Samoa until at least 19th May! The six NZ-based players in the team weren't even able to return to their families until last week due to NZ's ban on non-essential regional travel.
