True. But he's hasn't been in great form for us until recently. And showed little in the six nations as in impact sub. I still think his name not being on the list isn't a surprise.

Without going off too much at a tangent , Channel 4 is considered a possible broadcaster for The Lions Vs Japan.Should this happen apparently it will be the first time in almost 30 years that The Lions could be viewed on terrestrial TV.

To be honest I have never been a great fan of the Lions - it always seemed a strange concept even in amateur times. The total absurdity of combining the rugby might of FOUR nations to take on ONE Southern Hemisphere nation was highlighted for me this weekend by the report that Warren Garland attended the Northampton/Gloucester game checking out the credentials of players for his reserve list, including two South Africans ("qualified by residence").

Just discussing this at work with (current) rugby playing colleagues. Both stunned at no May but Daly in; also Farrell and Mako got the thumbs down. Discussion about Marcus Smith got same, but Sinckler's exclusion was decried. Interesting to see they both felt both Gatland and Jones were past their sell-by-date.

Genge isn't first choice for his country and hasn't played much for his club this season - he was always going to be an outside bet. One of those players whose career is perhaps suffering from being a perennial England bench warmer - might be better off playing a full season for Tigers and putting a run of games together. Surely that would be more beneficial than spending most of the year so far sat in the spa at Pennyhill Park with the occasional run out at the end of an England game?

Daly is in for his versatility compared to specialists like May. Centre, wing, full back and he offers a long range kicking option - very handy to have in the squad.

That’s just pure speculation and guesswork from the Welsh equivalent of the Daily Mail.

We've had the same discussion at work and it's bizarre that Daly and (to a lesser extent) Farrell seem to be getting the brunt of the blame for England's poor 6 Nations, which has led to some head scratching amongst some people when they both appeared in the Lions squad. I'd love to see Daly get a run at 13, I think it's his best position, at 15 he's exposed, despite having a massive boot and on the wing he's wasted and not 100% under the high ball. I think it would take shift in mindset, to have Smith running the show at 10, which would/could release Daly at outside centre. I fear he's in the Lions squad as a "utility" back, so we may not see him in what I think is his best position. Surely Farrell was one of the first names on the list. He was superb in the French game at Twickenham but the focus is always on his interaction with Gauzere vs the Welsh and his tackle technique. He's one of the key men in the senior leadership group, for country and the Lions and he will set the standards in training etc.

With regards to 4 nations v 1 .. the peculiarity is really the fact we play as 4 nations in the first place. The UK is the only country that do this to my knowledge (and only in Rugby and football I think).
The Lions are actually 2 states which is odd in itself .. but then again when Ireland play as a whole island.. well that’s another can of worms altogether.
In Athletics, The UK competes as a country for major competition barring commonwealth, and in cricket there is the further anomaly that England and Wales compete together whilst Scotland are separate and Ireland.. well we’re back to that again.
Can anyone imagine Germany saying Bavaria will be competing on their own in this competition or USA saying Texas will be playing as part of Mexico in this one.
We are an odd lot .. The British and Irish!!
The skill of the Lions coach is not in the players he has available or indeed he picks but blending those disparate elements together in very short order and forming a coherent team that are in a all for one and one for all mindset by the time the first test comes around. That has become harder with shorter tours.
