Ealing threatening legal action

Post by JP14 » Sun Mar 22, 2020 11:52 am

In today’s Rugby Paper, the Trailblazers are consulting legal action because they believe they were in contention for promotion despite an 18 point difference between them and the Falcons.

Eerily similar to SRU’s pathetic response to Storm Ciara.

Not sure what they hope to achieve, surely it's Newcastle promoted or no one?

Probably just looking for some publicity.

I very much doubt it’s publicity, I suspect it’s more to do with making sure they are promoted before ringfencing is introduced. It seemed to me for some time, that Ealing have been planning to be a premiership club within the next three years or so. If it looks like the drawbridge is being raised, then they need to bring plans forward.

They have one game in hand and still need to play Newcastle. They are 18 points behind so could be just 8 points behind after those 2 games.

Presumably Ealing would have to demonstrate that they meet any other criteria for promotion, not just potentially finishing top of the league. Or have the Premiership rules relating to grounds, seating capacities, etc gone?

They'd do better to spend the legal fees on their own people.

They can threaten but it wouldn't be advisable to see it through in my opinion.
Newcastle are 71 points from 15 matches, at 4.73 points per match with 7 matches to go and unbeaten so far they look likely to achieve a total of about 104 points.
Ealing are 53 points from 14 matches, 3.79 points per match with 8 matches to go which would equate to a total of about 83 points.

I am sure they are disappointed but the current situation is unique.

It may well turn out that rugby may well not return in time for next season. Perhaps this season may get completed next year if we are lucky.

Perhaps they are hoping to force the league to allow 2 teams to be promoted? Of course this would mean 2 being relegated the next season to allow the number in the Premiership to return to normal. I think that is unlikely but from their point of view it might be a greater possibility than overhauling the Falcons.

They'll be competition rules that they signed up to thay govern matches that can't be played. Zero chance of any legal action being successful.

Smack down from Falcons IMHO:

Very well said, Deano. Newcastle should be promoted, Ealing should not. If Ealing do take legal action it will be a complete waste of time and resources when there are more important things to worry about.

It was a very well worded piece, but I imagine the Newcastle press officer wrote it for Deano, too many long words for him
