Refereeing Question

Post by LE18 »

Just watching Italy v Scotland

Scotland attacking, knock ball on, ball goes into Italy dead ball area, Referee blows for 5 mtr scrum to Italy, why did he not play advantage to Italy and allow them to touch down for a 22 dropout which would have cleared their line?
Italy lose the scrum to a Scotland penalty, they go on to score, what sort of advantage to Italy was that?
Is my interpretation of advantage rule flawed?

How can they touch down in the dead ball area? The ball is dead!

I suspect the OP meant “in-goal area”, rather than ”dead-ball area”.
If so, it’s a valid question. The ref could have played advantage, but I suspect he just plain got it wrong.
Then again, the ref is always right. Rugby, eh?
In my defence, I was left unsupervised….

I thought that but I didn't notice who took it over the try line. I assume it must have been an Italian based on the refs decision.

Sorry I did mean In Goal Area, and No, it was knocked on by Scotland, Italy did not touch it, I certainly would have preferred to be given a 22 drop out, rather than have a Scrum 5 in a dangerous area. I did think that ref did well, neither Peyper today.
