Trouble at mill - May to go?
The Times reporting that May will have to take a pay cut from his current £300,000 a year if he is to stay at Tigers. The club needs to rebuild, and pay cuts are on the way.
Effort being put in to retain Ford (£600k), Genge and Youngs, who wants to remain in England contention, but if not part of Jones’ plans, may go abroad.

Why is that trouble at the mill?
Rather the club rebuild.
Rather the club rebuild.
Re: Trouble at mill - May to go?
Having to sacrifice a world class, try scoring winner isn’t bad news?
Rebuilding is essential, but retaining experienced players around whom the squad can be built is essential too. What surprised me was the desire to hang on to Youngs!

Even if Youngs is to be kept he should be on the one taking the paycut not May.

Re: Trouble at mill - May to go?
Priorities.
Is winger really that much of a position of influence that we need to have big money at, currently?
If we have Holmes and Veainu that's 2 internationals in the back 3.
On top of that you have the time period May is away with England to factor.
I would love to keep him he's a great player really is world class, but not hard to see why the club might view this.

TBF that might also be the case.

Neither of the above are in May's classRagingBull wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 9:18 am Priorities.

Re: Trouble at mill - May to go?
But again do you need May's class at club level on the wing?
It's not like he's a Naiyaravoro type winger that draws two people too him.
and it's not like he offers the ability to cover 15 also like Williams or Hogg who can do a job across the back 3.
Like in reality does May being on the wing offer us more of a chance of winning than say trying to snatch a Loader or a even a Malouf type 7's signing project and investing in an area such as Hooker, Lock, Back Row etc. at the clubs current condition.

Agree with you RB but if it was a case of cutting Young’s pay by say £50k to keep May would definately do itRagingBull wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 9:26 am But again do you need May's class at club level on the wing?

Agreed 100%, Jonny is one of my all time favourite players but he is a luxury player, if we were to loose him we would still have Holmes who is a very similar style player as well as Veainu, Olowofela, Thompstone and Viljoen with Steward, Browning and Gilliland in the devRagingBull wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2019 9:26 am But again do you need May's class at club level on the wing?

Re: Trouble at mill - May to go?
Wing is one of those positions where you don’t want to spending a large chunk of the cap on a player, especially when they’re going to be away in the Autumn and Six Nations periods. At least Naholo and Naiyaravoro are available all year round for their respective clubs. Yet if we can’t front up in the pack or get front foot ball, May on the wing isn’t going to help. At least with a bigger winger you could get some momentum off first phase crash ball.
Out of all the England players out of contract, May would be bottom of the priority list. World class winger, but not a luxury maybe Tigers can afford at the minute.
Wingers like Thorley, Collins and Ibitoye show you don’t need to spend loads of money to get effective try scorers.

Re: Trouble at mill - May to go?
Leicester have been one dimensional across all areas.
The ability to change it up has been limited.
If you look at a side like Saints then they are predictable as individuals but as a collective they can be unpredictable.
By hook or by crook they find more mismatches.
Leicester used to play with more variety such as a back row of Croft, Salvi and TTT or a back three of the likes of Alex. T, Murphy and Varndell.

Re: Trouble at mill - May to go?
...if push came to shove ,personally I rather be with out May than either Ford or Genge.
Seemingly heading rapidly toward senility .....Not long or far to go now , in fact, getting worse daily.....
Re: Trouble at mill - May to go?
If we had to lose any of our big names I am afraid I would have to say Ben Youngs would be the one we would miss the least

Re: Trouble at mill - May to go?
Could well be the start of a slippery slope. Players like May, Genge, Ford and Manu, don't get to their level without ambition. They want to achieve, as well as gain a secure financial future. Taking into account the way Tigers fortunes have changed over the past couple of seasons, and in the eyes of a lot, this season's looking bleak, those four, and others must be thinking about whether they want to be part of a building club, an achieving club, or a Championship club. It seems unlikely that they're going to have either a secure and sustainable high level of salary, or medals and silverware in the foreseeable future, by stopping where they are. The fact that Saints have appeared to have had a fairly speedy recovery doesn't mean that's going to happen every time a club goes through a period of the Doldrums.
