Is Boladau worth keeping long-term?

Post by JP14 »

Lively replacement in today’s game as reported, do you think we should extend his stay?

At 33 he's not getting any younger and we have a number of young players developing out on loan.

Well Kalamafoni is 31 but if we signed Boladau for a season with an option, his wage bill would not be comparable.

He plays well enough so he's young enough!

Back row resources already are Liebenberg, Taufua, Coghlan, Kalamafoni, Thompson, Reffel, plus a number of youngsters, is there room for him when those 6 are all here

Agreee, would love to say yes but we sadly don’t need him. Pretty sure as well that the likes of Coghlan and Reffell are on long term deals so we want to develop them as players.

Boladau has a touch of class.
If his strength and conditioning is peak he'd be a good addition.
Boladau isn't too old.
Guy Thompson is 32 and has more all round then any youngster.
Class is class.

The question is long term. Extending his loan until the end of the season might be an option. Long term I read in rugby terms as a three year deal. Not sure two would be a good idea. The problem you get is when a player of that age gets injured, they take longer to recover and they don't tend to return the same.

We need a good split on backrow age. Kalamafoni and Thompson are in their 30s, Taufua and Coghlan are over 25 but under 30, Liebenburg and Reffell are under 25. Then there's the development players. That's a good split. Add another over 30 and that's potentially taking away game time from a younger player that then opts to leave which then gives us a succession problem in a year or two time. We then have to spend money scouting a replacement and probably then have to spend more on wages than we would have done with the development player.

On the evidence of yesterday certainly worth keeping until the end of he season with an option to extend by a further season. For me it depends on whether Kalamafoni stays beyond the end of this season which is when I believe his contract is up. Somebody with greater info than me can perhaps confirm that. If Kalamafoni does leave than keeping Boladau gives us time to look around for a younger replacement.

For me the back row options for this season would then be 6/8 Kalamafoni, Liebenberg, Taufua, Boladau, Coghlan and at 7 Thompson or Reffel with additional cover at 7 from Taufua and Liebenberg.

Thought he was excellent yesterday and his attitude was fantastic. He is well worth a contract and his handling skills, ability to break tackles and pace around the pitch impressed yesterday. Kalamafoni and Veaniu had very good world cups so will come back with confidence high. Last season Kalamafoni had to play out of position and did a pretty good job.
Boladau, however, has shown what he can do, so in my opinion, yes give him a year and then assess at the end of the season. He looked pretty fit to me but of course didn’t play a full game but then again, who does except Fordy.
