It's illegal to lead with the forearm but refs rarely punish it, Mike Williams loved to do it, especially with the massive arm protector.
But it is legal to have your arm by your body and then push off after contact. What is illegal is "striking" your opponent, which I have always taken, and always seen refereed, as proactively moving your arm to initiate the contact.

Which is what happened, on the videos you can see his arm is up protecting the ball, the initial impact of the tackle beds his arm back towards the ball before he straightens his arm and fends him off. For me it was worth checking but was not a penalty, particularly as the rules round the TMO are that only "clear and obvious" errors get over turned.

The arm did ride up, so worth checking, but it started very low and once you are in a tackle it is a very dynamic situation so super harsh to penalise him, particularly as he was not penalised originally.
Goooooodeeeeeyyyyy!

The French have made several changes to their team to face the USA on Wednesday morning the 2nd.

15. Ramos ; 14. Huget, 13. Guitoune, 12. Fickou, 11. Raka ; 10. Lopez, 9. Machenaud ; 7. Camara, 8. Picamoles (capt), 6. Iturria ; 5. Gabrillagues, 4. Leroux ; 3. Setiano, 2. Chat, 1. Baille.

16. Guirado, 17. Poirot, 18. Slimani, 19. Vahaamahina, 20. Alldritt, 21. Serin, 22. Ntamack, 23. Médard.

The USA will do well to restrict their defeat to less than 30 points.

They did better than that for most of the game! France, the eternal mystery of international rugby. ABs less so, it's actually painful watching them eat Canada for breakfast.

I think it was always likely to be the case. Despite their inclusion in the Southern Hemisphere tournaments imo Argentina have dropped slightly and don’t quite have the firepower to trouble the big nations especially when not playing at home.

Interesting watching the New Zealand game huge issues with a the slippery ball, even though it’s a covered arena, and this is where England’s quarter final is likely to be played.
Ben Kay made the point that with the wet ball things are made worse by the skin tight slippery shirts players now wear.
Maybe need to go back to the old fashioned cotton jersey

I caught the beginning of the second half but gave up when NZ were scoring tries faster than they were taking conversions.
I am neither clever enough to understand nor stupid enough to play this game

Boks look back to their brutal best but I'd take Polledri from Italy.

Would love to see Polledri here, maybe with the influx of kingsholm Boks

Madness by the Italian props, I wonder how far Wayne was from red carding them both.

Barnes showing again he’s the best ref in the world

The Springboks brushed aside Italy, as expected with their impressive pack, but the player who nearly always catches the eye is Toulouse winger Cheslin Kolbe. Despite his size, he's excellent in the air and is so elusive. Give him half an inch and he's gone!

The French team to play Tonga on Sunday has been announced, and a bonus point win can be expected.

Starting XV

15. Médard ; 14. Penaud, 13. Vakatawa, 12. Guitoune, 11. Raka ; 10. Ntamack, 9. Serin ; 7. Ollivon, 8. Alldritt, 6. Lauret ; 5. Vahaamahina, 4. Gabrillagues ; 3. Slimani, 2. Chat, 1. Poirot (cap.)

Replacements - 16. Guirado, 17. Baille, 18. Setiano, 19. Leroux, 20. Camara, 21. Dupont, 22. Lopez, 23. Barassi.

In my opinion, the only players who'll be in the starting XV against England are: Médard, Penaud, Ntamack, Ollivon, Vahaamahina, Slilani and Poirot.

Japan look good but this one of the worst Samoan teams I've seen for a while. A few years ago they looked so good and now they are still lacking a quality front five but the magic in the back line is also gone. Such a shame.

Samoa have still got the pack just not the backline especially in the halfbacks.
