New Head of Operations set to be appointed

Post by 1989Tiger »

According to The Rugby Paper, Jan McGinty is set to be appointed as the new Head of Operations.

He has been the Head of Operations for the SRU and used to have a role with Worcester.

...as said in an earlier post, the purpose being to free GG up to focus on scouting duties.

No need for apologies - didn't know it was to be McGinty; only that the post had been created.

So would his job to oversee day to day running of the club, on the rugby side or as a whole?

Day to day off field stuff.
Basically he will mainly be in charge of contracts.

A Head of Rugby operations job is to sort what the Director of Rugby wants basically.
So a DOR can either say he wants to get X player and ask for the Head of Rugby operations to make it fit potentially or he might say we need a big mean ball carrying 8 go and look for one that can fit our cap space and the Head of Rugby operations will do it.

Head of Rugby operations also play a role in the academy where resources should be put in and help try and sort the transition between the academy and Senior team with the help of the Academy Head Coach and Manager (Smith, Wilks and Mannion).

At the minute club doesn't have one, but that's just how it usually happens.
For example when Cohen was Head of Rugby operations he would deal with Cockers when he was Director of Rugby with MOC as Head Coach.

Not all clubs have Rugby Operations though.

I am uncertain of the set up these days.
Some clarity is required in my opinion.

Don't disagree.

Still CEO, hopefully will have less influence on the contracts side of things now.

For those who like US sports especially the NFL a Head of Rugby operations is pretty much the General Manager.

Adding a Head of Rugby Operations to the mix says to me we are definitely going to see the appointment of a Director of Rugby, otherwise you have too many people at ‘Head of’ level without an overall leader. Whether that’s an internal or an external appointment is a different matter.

Apparently we’re after a big name post-WC and Murphy’s future remains unclear, Ford is also expected to be retained.
