Wayne Barnes

Post by Ashurstwoodtiger »

If as has been reported earlier this year that Sir Barnes is to retire after the World Cup should Tigers offer him the job either as Consultant or Coach to enable the Team to stay on the right side of the Sirs left?

Some people who post on the Forum think that a lot of our losses are due to poor referring and not being able to play to the Sir in charge of the game. I agree a lot of the decisions are dubious so maybe some clarity from Wayne might help. OK would not solve the TMO problem but that's another question.

Nice idea, but I think Barnes wants to pursue punditry.

I think he'd be very good at it. Would add another viewpoint as well.

Imagine if you had a team made up 1 ex-forward who used to play for Team A, an ex-back who used to play for Team B and Wayne - could be nice and balanced with different experiences all adding value

Wayne Barnes is one of the best referees I have seen, it's a shame he is retiring, I have been very happy when he refs us as he seems to make very few mistakes, but then again I think all the refs in the premiership are top refs.

Not confirmed that he is retiring altogether....just from internationals and considering Premiership.

It would be an interesting role, but would it be viable?

He's a barrister. I thought the idea behind the retirement was to concentrate on his legal career and young family.

Dunno doesn't he live and work near London these days? Price of a coffee down there is astronomic. Especially when you factor in fair trade coffee and vegan options. :smt003

I have a lot more respect for Wayne than most, having listened to him and others on RefLink and radio. He passes on the TMO most of the time, says 'No, I'm happy with it' etc., and doesn't often make bloopers compared to some other refs.

I suspect that doing Prem games would not be a problem to him , wheras travelling all over the World to do Internationals does involve a lot of time away from job and family . I seem to recall that he is a Lawyer in quite a specialised field so money will not be a problem . He's the best of the bunch by a long way - much prefer him to some of the comedians we have had recently .

He works for a chambers in the Shard.

I promised my wife I'd take her up the Shard one day but she didn't seem keen.

It's a great shame. He's a great referee and Lord knows the AP needs good referees. There are some frankly terrible referees in the league. CMK being the worst. Maybe he'll improve a lot but right now he's not great. A lot of his officiating feels like guesswork and I get the distinct impression that the players don't really respect him.

They should put Barnesy in charge of referees imho.

I had heard his focus was moving away from rugby too. An excellent ref.
