In the case of the Spencer incident at Wasps, Taylor did not need to return to the pitch as he never left it because according to him and Spencer and the Wasp's physio there had been no contact with the head, others further away thought differently. Harrison saw a loose ball and dived on it, Simpson saw a loose ball and kicked at it, both actions are permitted in the rule of the game, I do not consider Simpson or Harrison to have been reckless, it was an unfortunate Rugby accident, Ref got it right.
I remember playing at Webb Ellis Rd when our second row Eddie Llewellyn broke through the lineout and fly hacked at a bouncing ball as the Rugby scrum half went for it and Eddie's shin contacted the head/neck of the nine, I can still hear the horrible noise of breaking bones as Eddie's leg shattered. No one was at fault then, no one was at fault on Saturday, Rugby is a hard game, that is why we love it.

:smt023 Nice one GK. The comment about the shirt cracked me up :smt043 :smt043 :smt043

The foot connecting with the head, involved an incident which in it's entirety was over in less than a second. The ball was available. The try, he couldn't see it. Nobody could see it. How can he give it? Guess it was a try? Or guess that it wasn't? Who wants a game won or lost by guesswork. In fairness to JPD, he took time looking at the replays. In slow motion, and in real time, both of which are important. Having looked at it, he decided on a course , and explained rationally why he was going down that road. Like it or not, it's the system we've got. Even better, it gives the fans something to discuss
Leave this forum immediately Coleshillad, that sort of common sense and empathy for the game has no place here!! :-D

He asked the right question too. If he hadve gone down the other route of "any reason why I can't award the try" it would've been given and that would've been a travesty. That question imo needs to be completely done away with, why should it be a lottery? If every angle is looked at there's no clear grounding then a try shouldn't be given. Thoughts?

Very nice to have a civil debate though :smt027

Agreed that the question needs to be regarding each individual incident. In yesterday’s Falcons game their winger looked to have scored at first look a good try. Sir Barnes thought there may have been an issue with the grounding, which there was, and asked his TMO to check that.

I did feel with the Wasps non try it would have made the job a lot clearer if they had been able to superimpose the try line on the one angle where the ball could be seen

I agree. Though as far as I was aware, the 'any reason' question is supposed to be asked if the ref thinks its a try (seen grounding) but thinks there was something he missed (knock on etc).
The 'yes or no' was supposed to be if he had no idea (couldnt see grounding)

If it had been a yes or no question from the ref then my gut feeling is that a try might've been awarded at the end.
The angles support a try even though no clear grounding can be seen, white line left and right of picture and nothing underneath downward pressure on the ball under the shoulder from the angle behind, and shoulders clearly over the line from front angle.
I must admit were it the other I might be spitting!
I had no idea at the time but looking at reaction elsewhere it would appear that the Willis disallowed try might've been a Leicester hand knocking the ball.
Add the forward pass that wasn't and it seems to have the Waspies buzzing about this like a swarm drunk on apple juice!

It was a yes or no question wasnt it? That's why he couldn't give it,the other question of"any reason why I can't award the try?" would've resulted in it being awarded.

Yes it was "yes or no" just checked. You've mixed the questions up BFG.
To simplify it: try yes or no means it has to be proved it WAS a try and favours defending team.
Any reason why I can't award the try means it has to be proved it WASNT a try and favours attacking team.

Yes sorry any reason I can't award the try at the end, mixed up the question with the Willis effort.
I saw a comment on Twitter from some bloke called Goode, no idea who he is but he was asking why JPD didn't get his head in to see the grounding for the last play, something he has done before apparently but made no effort on this occasion.

JPD got on his knees and obviously couldn’t see the ball grounded

That bloke Goode works for Wasps

Not necessarily as the answer to the question would have been "yes because I can't see the grounding".
