Tigers vs Barbarians 1987

Post by strawclearer »

This has just been tweeted by the Baa-baa's so thought I'd put it on here in case anyone can help...

Public Service Announcement 📢

@JiffyRugby covers our game for @bbcrugbyunion on Saturday

He scored many brilliant tries but says the best was for us v @LeicesterTigers in 1987

He’d love to relive it but can’t find any highlights 😞

Can anyone help? 🤔

I was in the old Member's Stand with my Dad but my mobile had run out of charge!

You had a mobile phone in 1987?

It was a joke, Ellis - although, actually, yes I did. I was with BT at the time and was part of the alpha and beta trials for the early models (which didn't have cameras btw!). I developed strong biceps carrying it around! (That was a joke too.)

Some people must have had pictures of the try though and maybe BBC East Midlands (or was it just BBC Midlands back then?) did a highlight reel as part of a news broadcast? They must have done, these were the days before Sky and the Baa-Baa games were of significant local interest.

I have video tapes of all tigers games shown on television here in the South from 1978 - 2005, including the first live televised league club game, which was at Welford Road.

I think @JiffyRugby would love to hear from you if you have a tape of the match!

I just have a picture of it in my head.

If people ask - I have always said he is the best non Tigers player I ever saw live (him and Michael Jones).

According to the Baabaas website (http://www.barbarianfc.co.uk/results-fi ... 1987-1988/), here are the the players who took the field that day on December 28th 1987. The score was 48-30 to the Tigers. I'm sure I was there, but as with most of the Barbarians' matches my memory is misted by an excessive intake of something or other!!

W. A. Anderson Ireland
M. D. Bailey England
R. G. Collins Wales
Jonathan Davies Wales
D. C. Fitzgerald Ireland
M. E. Harrison England
G. J. Hartley
R. N. Jones Wales
A. R. MacFarlane
P. M. Matthews Ireland
N. D. Melville England
B. C. Moore England
C. J. Olver England
P. A. Orr Ireland
N. C. Redman England

A rather good 7 as well I remember. I certainly remember the ginger hair
To win is not as important as playing with style!
