The Tigers Team That Never Was

Post by kpj tiger »

With Huw Jones apparently being a done deal and then not it got me thinking back to all the high profile players that supposedly had or were close to putting pen to paper and if you could actually make a full team out of them now? Any suggestions welcome.

10. Jonny Wilkinson
11. Rupeni Caucau
12. Juan Martin Hernandez
13. Huw Jones
14. Marika Vunibaka
15. Damien Mckenzie

Didn't we go in for Jonny in 2003 as well?

I suppose, at the moment Leatigaga would be an option at prop.

I believe we failed to go after Cyle Brink, he can play 7. Plus, the Tigers never approached McKenzie, that was purely agent talk to get him capped by Steve Hansen.

Tigers did approach him.

I mean what is the requirements to this team just who we talk too or do they have to have agreed to coming?
Kaino got pretty close to joining one year.
Pretty sure we also nearly signed Ross Ford another year.

9 Augustin Pichot
4 Eben Etzebeth

Like Raging Bull I seem to recall an interest in Ross Ford for hooker
Tigers for the premiership and European Cup. Get behind the team and make some noise!!

A few years ago Andrew Merhtens was lined up for fly half - told this at the time by a Board Member .

Weren't we supposed to sign Nick Evans before he went to quins as well?

Yep, kept him dangling while we chased JMH. Eventually Evans gave up and went to Quins.
In my defence, I was left unsupervised….

Was Flatman ever linked, or were you after good props?

Just notable players and now you mention him I do seem to remember something about Flatman being a target at one point

The Flatman situation was one that worked in our favour; we pulled the plug and ended up signing a chap called Marcus from Argentina instead...

Wasn’t there a story we were after Kubriashvili when we were looking to replace Castro, but because the deal to take Castro to Toulon took so long, we missed out and ended up with Schuster?
