Wasps Vs Tigers

Post by WhitecapTiger »

Normally a bit early for the next match, or associated, thread I know but worth mentioning that Wasps' super-signing Brad Shields won't be in the reckoning against us next week, broken his cheekbone today in his Prem debut against Chiefs.

3-8 weeks out estimate with visit to specialist on Monday for assessment.

For those that didn’t see it really nasty collision with the Exeter 9s Head.

Hughes has to be a doubt for them next week too

Looks like we might be minus Brendan O'Connor. Geordie post match interview said we are awaiting medical assessment on his hamstring. If category 1 injury a week to 10 days recovery, if category 2 several weeks. Good job Guy Thompson got some game time. Unsure about Eastmond also. Geordie referred to a calf problem but no further details. So we might have to start with Hardwick at 12 (no problem after his performance yesterday). Assuming that Tait and Owen are still injured, the alternative would be Matt Smith leaving Hardwick on the bench to cover 10 and 12. I'm not sure whether Toomua is due back again this week but even if he is, given his lack of time with the team, I would put him on the bench rather than starting him.

If Eastmond is unavailable then we have Hardwick who played well off the bench yesterday or Worth who played well and scored a great try for the A team on Monday.

Wasps are missing a few players but played very well against Exeter so they won't be easy to get past irrespective of whether Shields is out or not.

O’Conner is as important to us as Shields is to Wasps - possibly more so. The man is pure quality just can’t seem to string a few games together.

I think Geordie mentioned taking Eastmond off early as a precaution so hopefully, with some intense physio, he’ll be back next week - the last bit is my opinion not what Geordan said. Saying that, I have absolutely no problem putting Hardwick in there.

What area of their game will the Tigers be concentrating on this week? :smt002

Glad people are happy Hardwick at 12 I think that could be his best position with him filling in at 10

Yep, I remarked at the time he slotted in seamlessly. Not a talent in the same way as Eastmond, but good heads up play.

Geordie said, on RL, that Eastmond had a bit of tightness in his calf muscle.

Our imperative focus has to be on defence this week, Wasps tear any defence apart. For me we have got to stop them at the breakdown and hold the ball on for as long as possible.

In order to tackle the breakdown, I'm naming Wells as he's good over the ball over Williams. Thompson should know the trick of the trade having not long left Wasps therefore will be a real asset to have this week.

Tasty potential team....and I agree about ball retention, which was half our defensive problem this week, poor chase, not deep enough on kicks, too many kicks, inviting a very good attacking team to attack our flimsy defence.......

Having watched Wasps v Exeter everyone is spot on about not kicking the ball away.
Assuming Daley is still at fullback for them he will run back any wayward kicks with interest.
However the fact that he was at 15 meant there were defensive issues in the centres which Slade exploited on a number of occasions

Let's hope Manu can exploit them in the same way.

Glad to see you've been so decisive on your centres and full back! :smt023

Also, is defence really that important against Wasps?! They don't defend themselves and have the attitude of we will score more than you. Perhaps we should do the same?! :smt003

We tried that against Wasps in the AWC last year, lost 50-29 or something. That’s not going to work.
