The scrum stopped being a weapon during the Mauger + Cockerill era.

Short memories? Sarries penalty try free for all to dominating them recently has nothing to do with stanko? Really?!
Re: LEICESTER TIGERS 2018/19 SQUAD/TRANSFERS/CONTRACT THREAD Part Deux
The memory of those Saracens penalty tries versus us will always cause me to shudder .

Scrum stopped being a weapon when a generation of gnarly forwards retired. Most posters underrate how much gnarly players underpinned our successes up to 2012, the type of player who knew how good they were but didn't have to parlay it into choosing coaches......And I still relish being told about the games the forwards used to play with MOC
Leicester Tigers 1995-
Nottingham 1995-2000
Swansea (Whites) 1988-95
A game played on grass in the open air by teams of XV.

We are sometimes a little too nice these days. Gone are the days our forwards considered taking a backward step a crime. We could certainly do with a little more menace in the second and back row. Spencer should help that but that's a lot for him to shoulder on his own.jgriffin wrote: ↑Tue Aug 07, 2018 9:39 pm Scrum stopped being a weapon when a generation of gnarly forwards retired. Bring back the kit guy that only handed out the new guys strip after their first fight in training as per the MJ era. That will sort gnarl them up a bit.sam16111986 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 07, 2018 10:33 pmWe are sometimes a little too nice these days. If we had played Williams at 4 and Hamilton at 6, then we would have the dog and menace to dominate teams.

Exactly, we've had a few good homegrown players that can play 12, but no superstar. IMO Billy T was a good player, not a great one (and no real loss, but that's another thread on its own!). I don't know if the investment in excellent SH inside centres - Pat Howard, Daryl Gibson, Mauger, Toomua - is the cause of this lack of homegrown talent or because of it. But it does seem to be the position that Tigers buy in rather than develop.johnthegriff wrote: ↑Mon Aug 06, 2018 9:55 pm The comment was name a top class inside centre not 13's that occasionally played inside or Fly halves that sometimes played at 12. Billy T is a reasonable shout, but our most successful in the position have been Anthony Allen and Pat Howard neither of whom were as effective elsewhere. What are the qualities that determine that a player is an inside centre specialist.

But then again how many world class 12 has the entire academy system across England produced?

That’s your opinion, RagingBull, but in mine he did offer dog to the team with some outstanding close-range finishes from close range in his last two season.

English 12's....not sure its as valued a position as in Aus & NZ, hence the output of 12's from Down under.
Tigers have always looked better over recent seasons with a proper 12 & a proper 7.
Now which two countries really value those 2 positions & are come RWC short odds as winners.....

To win is not as important as playing with style!

I'm not sure that England doesn't value a 12 - more the difficulty of finding one with the right qualities. Currently, we have a converted 10 in Farrell.( Piers Francis too?). A really good 12 takes so much pressure off the 10, organising the line, both in attack and defence. Darryl Gibson was a master, imo, and Paddy not far behind him. Obviously, there are other factors too, but for me, it is not surprising that Tigers best seasons have been when we have top quality 12s.
