Racing 92 vs. Tigers

Post by strawclearer »

Racing 92 having a very mediocre season so far - played 7, won 3. Carter included in their injury list. There for the taking?

For me
1 Genge
2 Youngs
3 Cole
4 Wells
5 Barrow
6 Williams
7 O'Connor
8 Kalamafoni
9 Youngs
10 Ford
11 May
12 Toomua
13 Smith
14 Malouf (thompstone if fit)
15 Veainu

16 Mcguigan
17 Bateman
18 Logo/Cilliers
19 Mapaplangi
20 Evans
21 Harrison
22 Owen
23 Tait

Against Irish it was worrying how little impact our bench had harsh on Hamilton but O'Connor had a big impact against chiefs and Evans IMO would most likely bring more impact of the bench.

Tigers could only beat LI by 1 point. So no.
If Tigers play with the determination, passion, physicality and commitment they showed against Exeter and are patient in attack rather than trying to force things, then yes. If not, no. A good start and no switching off are essential. Personally I'm glad the LI game wasn't as easy as some thought it might be because that gives the players and coaches things to think about and work on. No away European fixture is easy so I hope we will see the return of Ben Youngs and Telusa Veainu.

Subject to availability my 23 would be:

Genge
T Youngs
Cole
Wells
Barrow
Williams
O Connor
Kalamafoni
B Youngs
G Ford
May
Toomua
Smith
Malouf
Veainu

Mc Guigan
Bateman
Cilliers
Maksymiw (Touhy not registered for Europe)
Mapapalangi
Harrison
Owen
Tait

I've assumed that Kitchener, Brady and H Thacker and Thompstone are still injured and unavailable for selection. If Harrison and Kalamafoni are unavailable due to concussion protocols then I would draft in Hamilton or Evans as back row cover with Mapapalangi moving to 8 and White or Kitto to cover scrum half.

Wormus you have Harry Wells listed as 80kgs 12st 8lb same as Ben White. A typo I assume.
Tigers for the premiership and European Cup. Get behind the team and make some noise!!

Can Tigers win at Racing on Saturday?
Yes, of course they can, but the odds would normally be against a win.
True, Racing's form this season isn't what we or they may have expected, having lost four of their seven matches, including a loss at home against current leaders Lyon a week ago.
Dan Carter is apparently on the injured list and I've no idea if he'll be fit for Saturday. They've very recently signed South African fly half Pat Lambie, but I don't know if he's been named in Racings' European squad. Maxime Machenaud, a scrum half played at 10 in their loss yesterday at Stade Rochelais.
Strawclearer asks the question, "Are they there for the taking?" The answer is "Non!" However, if a regular 10 isn't in their team, then the opportunity will be there to sneak a win!

Allowing for injuries and illness starting 15 just about picks itself. Probably start with Smith over Owen at 13, Owen will give more impact, and if Thompstone fit him ahead of Malouf.

Any news on Kitchener, fairly sure MOC said he would be not far away from the Racing game.
If not fit Hamilton and Mapapalangi on the bench on cover 2nd and back rows

15. Telusa Veainu
14. Nick Malouf
13. Matt Smith
12. Matt Toomua
11. Jonny May
10. George Ford
9. Ben Youngs
1. Ellis Genge
2. George McGuigan
3. Dan Cole
4. Dom Barrow
5. Harry Wells
6. Mike Williams
7. Will Evans
8. Tino Mapalangi

16. Tom Youngs
17. Greg Bateman
18. Pat Cilliers
19. Graham Kitchener
20. Brendan O'Connor
21. Ben White
22. Gareth Owen
23. Adam Thompstone

That's what I'd go with. Evans had a storming game on Saturday, that back line is seriously starting to come good and George just offers more than Tom atm.

I also think with George as skipper we looked more together and had a clearer game plan then when Youngs is skipper. I don't usually like fly halves as skipper but it seemed to work, at least in the first half.

Maybe, but as R92 are 8th and struggled against La Rochelle, no time like the present to get a win? Maybe, as some clubs are, they are more interested in the Top 14 league? If the Tigers are defensively patience then they can come home with 4 pts? While home game are a 'must win' to sneak one in Paris takes the pressure off a bit.
