Wow...would be sad to see Slater leave but he has been injury prone in recent seasons. May on the other hand is a quality operator, pace to burn and will improve at Tigers.

I really don't get why we would want May, he's fast but that's it

Would be happy with May coming - got some wheels, especially in open field, can play wing or FB, although likely to miss time for England call-ups - gives us more EQP standing too, but I wouldn't want to see Ed go, however if Brodie Retallick or sam Whitelock replaced him, that'd be fine...... :smt002

Would that leave us with Barrow, Kitch, Fitzgerald, H Wells, Maksymiw as locks with M Williams there for cover from the back row if we don't replace him?

I've probably missed someone or some rumour....

Some have been saying that you can't succeed without out and out speed, we need a real speedster, there's no substitute for real pace.

I kind of agree and May has that pace.

Might be that MOC sees Mike Williams as a lock. We do have a lot of back rowers and rumours seem to be that we're looking to add there instead of anymore second rows.

I just don't think May (or any pure speedster) is worth Slater plus £££ to buy his contract out

Because he is fast and a out and out finisher why wouldn't you want him really?

Always liked Ed Slater - good skipper too imho - but he has suffered from injuries (although wouldn't necessarily call him 'injury-prone.)

Love the idea of May joining us - could be part of a phenomenal back-line - and, as well as FB, doesn't he provide cover at centre?

But for every thing he does well he can do some pretty awful stuff too, I'm not against signing May necessarily but trading a local loyal fan favourite player and buying out a contract to get him seems like we are getting the rough end of the deal

The links to Brink, and latterly Botha didn't make sense, as we have quite a few back row.
Williams, O'Connor, Hamilton, Evans, Ryan, Croft, Kalamafoni and Mapapalangi. Adding a 9th back row player really is overkill, unless Williams and/or Mapapalangi are seen as viable lock options to replace Slater, and in doing so rejig the balance of the squad a bit.

The first genuine speed merchant we've had since Varndell? We aren't shy of good locks. I'm onboard with this.

He isn't the strongest under the high ball, he can get really lost in defence some times and he has an awful habit of running backwards when on the backfoot, are these outweighed by his positives? Possibly, if it was a straight swap I could stomach the deal but the release fee on top makes it feel a bit unbalanced for me

Harry Wells played outstandingly when called in last season and I was thinking same about the Varndell comment.

The release fee is only rumour though isn't it? And we don't know how big that would be if true. slater is a fan's favourite, including me, but things do move on.
