How do we beat Wasps?

Post by Chobbsy »

How do we beat Wasps, I know if we score more than them we will beat them, before someone says that.

They looked really good against Sarries, Good all around, we need to man up in the pack, don't over commit at the break down, close them down quickly and make our first up tackles.

Big D. Force knock on's, beast them in the scrum. Kick pens. Create scoreboard pressure.

More big D, get a couple of turnovers, more pens.

More big D, Wasps playing catch up, throw the ball around, leaving themselves open for counters and intercepts.

10 up with 20 to go. More big D.

We need big, organised defence. We need to play rugby in the right areas, so kicking out of our own half into the corners and then put huge pressure on their lineouts and have a big, powerful defence, forcing them to kick the ball away.

We need to play the game at our pace, not theirs and make sure the ball is kept away from their back line as much as possible.

We don't need anything fancy and we don't need to try to play the game at 100mph and we certainly don't need to go out their thinking the fans need to be "entertained" and "excited".

Any opportunity we get to take 3 points, whether it's penalties or drop goals, we need to take them.

Don't give their backs any space.
Don't give Wade, Daly and Beale dog legs to attack
Try and build an early score (I think if we get ahead Wasps might crumble. They are not use to this position and having finished top the pressure is on them. It will also keep the crowd quiet)
Get our big men running at Cips

Keep it tight.
Smash them behind the gain line in contact.
Dominate the set piece.
If we kick ball away, make sure we find touch.

I'll be entertained and excited if we win 3 - 0! The win is all that matters!

I don't think Wasps played that well against a de-constructed Sarries side IMO? The sin bin of Maitland (which IMO was fair contest - regardless of the letter of the rule) turned the game Wasps way. They do have frailties in defence and rely on their strike runners. Take Gopperth out of the game and hit Cips a few times and holes will open up. The Tigers gifted them the game on their last visit so I see no reason why the Tigers should have any pressure going into this one?

I think we have the clues already.

As already mentioned, Leinster created a perfect model - but also the second half that we played against them at the Ricoh earlier this season was the blueprint.

Broken games are the ones they love - boring, restrictive games with emphasis on set piece, allied with big defensive shifts they do not.

Bring our best performance of the season.
Keep them on the back foot.
Don't give their backs space.
Freddie to keep pegging them back.
Defence line to hold tight and create no gaps.
Win good ball up front and prevent them winning good ball.
Thousands of us to be there as the sixteenth man.

Keep it in the forwards. Not impressed by their front five this season.

Do what we did to Newcastle.
They had very dangerous backs, but we didn't give them a sniff of a try all game.
