While there may not be any (LV except) 'pots in the cupboard' yet, the way he has structured Exeter over the past few season since their arrival in the Prem is significant. They managed to survive their first season and have improved season on season. Friday's game against a Tigers side that has poor forward play in the loose gifted them the win. Their structure was very good, even under pressure. Their ability to take points in poor conditions and on nearly every visit to the 22 is an endorsement of their quality as 'a squad'.

As Baxter said, "We are still a relatively new Prem club but if you finish second as we did and you are runners-up in the final, as long as you keep the foundations in place there is only one thing to aim for and that is to win it."

Given their performance Friday and their ability to get over the season-start hiccups they probably will?

Completely so. Baxter has a position in the club and community that even Tony Rowe can't touch. He won't be going anywhere soon, certainly while Chiefs continue to improve and while he has the option of retiring to the Devon countryside.

There is a better way, certainly. Tigers have to pay the moolah for real achieving DORs and coaches, and certainly not bring in half-beens like MOC. The best DOR would have been Johnno, strictly as a DOR and Tigers icon, coupled with a seriously good Head Coach from outside, gifted with appointing a new team after reviewing the current ones (Brett may qualify, not sure about the rest). I'd have thought hard about Gustard, for example, as one who understand Tigers.
BTW appointing EJ or Dai Young would also keep some Tigers DNA, however tenuous.

That's a rhetorical question. There's always a better way and if you find it, bottle it and sell it you'll make a fortune.

I find it a bit quaint that the ones who were bemoaning our boring forward dominated play a few years ago and despite the success that it bought were calling for a more exciting 15 man game now applaud Baxter for these self same one dimensional tactics, the only reason I agree that Cocker's had to go is that he was not strong enough to believe in himself and ignore the armchair pundits.
Cocker's in his heart always thought you paid top dollar for props, good money for second rows and the loose change was for paying the backs wages!

Apart from being ex-Tigers what would make Johnno the best choice as DOR?
Apart from a brief involvement with England (an utter flop, not entirely his fault) he's hasn't been involved in top level coaching since he retired 10+ years ago. Yes he was a fine player but beyond that (and that was quite some time ago) lacking any anything to distinguish him as a coach or to suggest he could select and steer the head coach in a DOR role.
Personally I don't think being ex-Tigers or ex-international is a qualification as such. Neither make you an good coach or manager in their own right but may give you gravitas with senior players if you are a good coach.
