Hostile "Tigers Fan" in the Holland & Barratt stand

Post by WirralExile »

Irrespective of the result, on Saturday my son and I were subjected to a tirade of verbal abuse during the match. We have been sat in the lower tier of the main H&B stand for a number of seasons now, on a row immediately in front of other regular, I'm assuming Season Ticket holders. The dad in this group has never had anything positive to say in support of the team and his comments were reaching a peak on Saturday. He told his sons, either side of him, how we had been nilled at Glasgow, which we know is incorrect, he'd also said we should have signed a centre at the start of the season. I, politely corrected him on the centre signing (Matt Toomua) and my son, equally poilitely corrected him on our Glasgow result. At that point he verbally laid into my son, suggesting he had no respect for him as he had dared to speak to him. He went to suggest that my son clearly didn't go to private school as he had not shown respect for his elders. He said my son would fail his GCSEs, A Levels and be a failure. All because he had spoken to him. He questioned what job I did (how is that relevant) and that I had clearly failed because I hadn't sent my son to private school.
How he could have arrived at this assumption is beyond me. But after a number of seasons sat in front of him, listening to his negativity, whether Tigers win lose or draw, and his incorrect statement of facts, I spoke out. Maybe I shouldn't.
How I kept a lid on my temper when he said my son was going was going to be a failure I don't know - others may have not. This person doesn't know me, or my son. Or know where he attends school. This so called fan, to call a 14 year old boy a failure is not the type of person I wish to sit in front of, or anywhere near again.

This person, and if you are reading this, you know who you are, needs to consider how he speaks to people. My son may have learning difficulties - he doesn't I hasten to add, in fact he is doing extremely well at school - but this person didn't know that. His assumption that my son having the confidence to speak to someone and to correct an earlier statement he'd made suggested he didn't attend a fee paying school was totally illogical. But to then call him a failure....(!!!) Others at that point may have taken matters into their own hands.

Yes, my son and I both know that Tigers didn't play well on Saturday. However, I spent many a happy year coaching him and others at Market Harborough and I would not have ever used the langauge used by this individual. Encouragement over criticism every time, win lose or draw.

I felt so strongly about what happened to us on Saturday that I have emailed the club. Thankfully, Tigers have been very supportive and have moved our season tickets.

Let's hope the village missing their idiot can now get him back.

And he clearly did, since he's got the kind of in-built arrogance and sneery outlook at anyone else below him that is far too prevalent in private schools.

What a prat.

Surely, rather than inconvenience you, they should have moved the idiot - outside the ground preferably.

What a complete !!

You are congratulated for holding your tongue, and really for not dropping him there and then!!

Much like the prat of a woman complaining that my heavily pregnant wife went to the toilet twice in one half (both times at a break in play I might add), you will be best putting this down to him just being one of those :censored: that frequent every ground.

I am furious just reading this !!!!!

Problem is the guy seems to have done nothing that would warrant him being sanctioned. He's just made himself look a prat.

Well said for posting your concerns on this forum. Considering how small a crowd there was I am surprised that a steward did not pick up on this issue and get it sorted.
Yes get your efforts behind the team, and boy do they need help, but do not let the situation get out of hand. I suspect if it was a football watch somebody would have had a :censored: nose.
I am glad that you acted as the adult in this situation. Sounds like we were the lucky ones behind the posts, we had to put up with the Scotts!
Good bunch they were but it was painful to say the least each time they scored.

Well done, Wirral. Good post and good reaction from you. And give your son our best wishes too for having to put up with the idiot.
It was probably that bloke who got banned from the Forum just before Xmas: there is a similarity to both the behaviour and the posts unfortunately

And how is your statement not just as bigoted and narrow-minded as the perpetrator of this abuse?

I have a feeling that this tirade came from a so called fan that I have heard on a few occasions before. One instance a lady informed a steward who i turn must have told a supervisor, he (the supervisor) handled the situation brilliantly, he left the guy in no doubt that his actions were way out of order.

It seems that the idiot is at it again, I didn't here him this week but I must admit I didn't spend a great deal in my seat !!!

Come on guys - 'manners' are a function of many things within the 'socialisation process', only one of which is schooling. (In reality, 'the family' is the major agent of socialisation.)

One ill-mannered individual behaves badly on match-day - so we turn on each other within the forum? About the types of school we went to? Really??? :smt018

Strawclearer - the person in question was having a right go at my son and made assumptions about how and where he is schooled. He was the one having a dig at me and my son. To say to any 14 year old, irrespectve of what school he attends, that he is going to be a failure just because he had the confidence to speak to him is unacceptable.

It must have been the shock that prevented me from, as others have suggested, giving him a :censored: nose.

WE - if I appear to be critical of you then apologies, that's not my intention. I was simply suggesting that we on this forum should not let it start an argument about whether the type of school one attends is the sole determinant of 'manners' or behaviour in general!

As for the incident, the behaviour of this idiot said nothing about you or your son but spoke volumes about him! I would hope the Club might find a way of remonstrating with him and, if he finds apologising outside of his abilities as well - they should decline any further S/T requests from him imho.

Strawclearer - thank you and others for your support in this. My son and I will be returning for the Saints match in the re-allocated seats that the club have offered and will be cheering on our team as we always do. As someone else has said, we need to get behind the team now more than any other time in living memory.

Things will get better, I too remember the Final against Sale.

This is so sad that we live in a world where idiots like this feel they have a right to do things like this..

Could you please clarify where you were sitting so I can sit behind said person, spill a drink on him and then call him a pleb (nothing riles a person that thinks they are posh more than this) then I will tell him what school I went to and rile him up so much he hits me and then we can kick him out for good :smt003 :smt023

I would enjoy that so very much...

Sad truth is he is probably mates with Simon Cohen and I would get a lifetime ban :smt003
