Good tackle now illegal and other issues
Just had a long discussion about tackling with #1 son who felt that good tackles where you drive from the front under the COG and holding the hamstring area could get a card if they're dumped on their back. Was not totally convinced - please comment

Re: Good tackle now illegal?
Hi,
Lifting a leg to take the weight off it so you can more easily drive the play back is ok as long as the legs do not go over the horizontal and above the players waist. The problem is the tackling player keeping in control of the tackled player. If other players knock one or both of them off balance it is easy for the tackler to look like they are driving the player into the ground as they both fall over. Fall on the back after legs above hips = yellow, fall into head = possibly red.
My take on it qualified as ref but at very low level

Re: Good tackle now illegal?
Wrapping arms and driving through (horizontal) would theoretically never be penalised no matter the outcome as there is no lift involved. Driving low to high may result in lifting the player, therefore the risk of a tip tackle is higher.
Re: Good tackle now illegal?
We actually did a demo and we showed that any drive below the COG straightening your legs (as tackler) could produce a yellow card. His take was that a perfectly legitimate tackle for the last 100 years has been outlawed while entry through the gate has been abandoned as a Law. This arose as he was asked to play a half for his best mates team, but told he could not use his former trademark back row dump tackle.
Mrs G says rugby is going soft in general but can't police situations like north. She has just said 'bring back proper rugby, fast, less injuries, you'll soon be unable to touch each other'. She is appalled by this and some other developments.

Read the article, then the comprehensive thread post by Guy Everton. #2 just about sums up much thinking on this forum.
